The Mike Stern - Jeff Lorber Fusion 12/12/19 The Kuumbwa Jazz Club, Santa Cruz ,CA

Still trying to pick my jaw up off of the floor. If this wasn't the greatest jazz show I've ever heard...........jeez it's RIGHT up there is all I can say. An All-Star cast to be SURE as Jimmy Haslip hails from The Yellowjackets, drummer Dave Weckl a storied career including The Chick Corea Electric Band.
Jeff Lorber? When I first saw this advertised, that Jeff Lorber was playing in a band with Mike Stern, I about fell over. I was into Lorber back in the early 80's when he dominated the LA fusion scene. What a monster still.............hearing him and Stern together is a treat only true jazz aficionados could appreciate.
The "video" is actually audio only, an 8:00 minute very beautiful tune. The video police were out in force but I wanted to capture something so I simply held the camera down between my legs. This is one of the more mellow tunes they did and I wanted to share because I think it's really lost on people who never bother to expose themselves to jazz how intensely beautiful it can be at times.
Whatever they played, it was ALL brilliant!! About a one hour 10 minute set. Mike Stern's wife Leni joined them for maybe half of the show. On the first tune she played some kind of African string instrument while singing. The rest of what she did was on rhythm electric guitar. She is obviously quite accomplished. Only the first tune had any vocals.
I have one other audio only that is more of the progressive/jamming bent that you might expect from these guys. It will be posted later today so check back if interested. I'm doing a road trip to SoCal tomorrow for the Holidays but before I leave am making a point to pick up the new Mike Stern/Jeff Lorber release, "Eleven". Most of the show was from the record so I know it's gotta be GREAT.
By the way you East Coasters: They are at The Iridium in New York this Thursday night, 12/19.
Mike Stern: Lead guitar
Leni Stern: Rhythm guitar/vocals
Jeff Lorber: Keyboards
Jimmy Haslip: Bass
Dave Weckl: Drums

Here's another, as mentioned, more on the fusion bent. It's about 10 minutes.

Interesting? I'm obligated to see Scott Sharrard & Friends on the 19th, but his show ends @ 8:30ish, depending how far I park and if I can find a spot, I may try to catch some of this, Thanx for heads-up. Here's a couple vid's I found.

Jimmy Haslip will always have a place in my heart because of his role in the short-lived Tommy Bolin Band, 1976.
