The Dawes(with Duane Betts)

I saw some YouTube songs and really liked this band.Great attitude about music and decent playing-not up to the standard of any great bands or players, but very good-with good songs!
Duane Betts is limited in his bag of tricks, but he clearly learned some things form his old man.He sounds good in this band.
They are coming around near me-any opinions about them? Is it worth the time to go see them?

Haven't seen them yet but I want to. So I'd say go. Also there song All Your Favorite Bands is one of my favorite songs.

I saw them a couple of years ago open for Bob Dylan and were really impressed. This was Pre-Duane Betts. Really good songs and good playing. Would like to see them with Betts though.

I am a big fan of Dawes. I think Taylor Goldsmith is one of the great modern day songwriters. Definitely worth going to see.

Good to hear...thanks.
I'm a huge fan of The Band and lots of people in that world turned me on to them, pre Betts and I'd love to go.

I saw them a few years ago open for Dylan also, pre-Duane Betts. They were pretty good and seemed to go over well as I recall. As I recall, they reminded me slightly of Bright Eyes, Wilco, those kinds of bands, although obviously their own thing. I say go and give us a review!

This article from a few years ago gives some history and good details on the drummer for Dawes, Griffin Goldsmith.
He and his brother Taylor are the real deal, for sure. And the rest of the band fits right in.
I've seen them three times (pre Duane Betts) and was impressed each time. The songwriting is excellent.
They have garnered a ton of critical acclaim for sure.
Go see 'em.

The new Dawes album "We're All Gonna Die" has greatly damaged my opinion on this band. After 4 albums with a great sound and songwriting, they put out a piece of modern indy rock pop with drum loops and synths all over the album. What a huge disappointment.
Blake Mills produced it, and to me he also butchered the Alabama Shakes second album with his production. The previous Dawes album was produced by Dave Rawlings and sounds so much better.
Duane Betts is still the touring guitarist, but still not an actual member of the band as he isn't in any of the press photos and didn't play on the album.

Dawes is one of my favorite bands. Their new album took me a few listens to get into. It's not the same guitar-driven folk rock stuff from a musical standpoint but many of the songs still have the recognizable songwriting style of Taylor's. The singles don't do a great job portraying that.
Duane is as of right now not touring with Dawes. Trevor Menear from L.A. has been for about a month. Not sure why or if it's permanent.

I've listened to the new Dawes album twice and can't get into it at all. It's too much of a departure from the sound of theirs that I really enjoy. Too much modern indy pop sounding. It seems synths have made a comeback in the 2010's.
Didn't know that about Duane not being with the band on tour anymore.

Not only is Duane not touring with the band, he had nothing to do with the new album. I saw Dawes in Asheville at the Christmas Jam and was blown away. Duane had a lot to do with that. I saw them again in July in Cinncinati and Duane just seemed disconnected from the band. I also saw them last month do a television taping at the Iradium and was bored. This was without Duane.

Duane was picked up for part of the tour and he's done now - he didn't add all that much despite the excitement among his fans.

Personally, I don't agree, and I've been a fan since the first album.

I wish I did not, but I agree.. will keep trying a few more times.

I guess I want to blame Blake Mills as the producer, but my guess is he wouldn't have messed with their sound unless the band wanted to change things up.
What I loved about the band was a very organic sound and Taylor Goldsmith's songwriting. However, this new sound is too much of a left turn.
I feel like with a lot of modern music that these people are trying to rediscover the 80's with synths and programming.

Nailed it.
that phase of 80's music was mostly not a good thing.
As for excitement, hey, Marc Ford is my idea of adding excitement. Not Mr. Du-Betts.
I wish Marc and Woody would do something together again. Blue Mule.

Marc and Woody? Say what?

I'd love to see Woody again too.

That is such a great typo I have to leave it. I can't think of Warren without Woody and sho' nuf, Woody stopped by to visit through the intarwebz.

he didn't add all that much
😉

Here is a very nice YouTube clip featuring Dawes w/ Duane from a David Letterman broadcast on 4/22 15 .
This segment happened after the show and was not broadcast but it features an incredible cover of Warren Zevon's Desperados Under The Eaves. It also features a nice Warren Zevon story at the end by Dave.

Nice cover that is very faithful to the original. So faithful, in fact, that I don't hear anything from Duane Betts that I would call original or exciting. I could point to him jamming with Warren (that is up on youtube) and his solo has some repetitive tweedles but doesn't really go anywhere.
He's a yawner.

I too liked Dawes a lot after seeing them at Christmas Jam. I have listened to the new album 3 times through so far, and as much as I want to love it as much as the others, I just can't. It's like someone else wrote the whole thing. So disappointed.
