Thanks rob, I have had this on bootleg DVD for years and agree it is excellent.

"In My Time of Dying" is epic with  Jimmy just ripping it up. The Crowes just look at each other with big smiles after the song as if amazed at Jimmy's playing.

Highly recommended viewing.

I have the bootleg DVD of this as well. I wish I had been able to see this tour live.

Shame that Jimmy couldn't deal with the drama and personality issues of the Crowes. A long tour would have been nice.

If you haven't read Steve Gorman's book you should. He talks about Jimmy's time playing with them and I agree, they could have had a world tour with him.

I had tix's to the Indy show and was heartbroken when it was cancelled. At the time, it was rumored Jimmy was having back issues. From reading the book I wonder if it was more to do with Rich blowing Page off about making music together.

I've still got the unused tickets from the show they canceled at Shoreline Amphitheater - what a crushing disappointment.  I wonder if I'll ever get to see Jimmy Page.

@jszfunk I saw the 1990 tour. Liked the Crows enough that I caught a second show. Wasn't very familiar with the guys in the band and wasn't even aware Marc Ford wasn't on the first album until a few weeks ago.

Chris said recently the reason Gorman isn't there now is because he is the most negative and destructive person a musician could possibly work with.

Rich not wanting to make music with Jimmy Page is like Gov't Mule or String Cheese or Widespread Panic blowing off Eric Clapton or David Gilmore wanting to do something with their bands.

Of course the first Crows album unlike the bands I just mentioned did sell over 5 million copies so maybe for a few years Rich thought they were as big and important to the world of rock as Led Zeppelin.

Just read an interview with Steve Hackett. Said a band isn't like working for a solo artist where one person is the boss. A band should work and create together and support each other's creative drive. But he walked from Genesis because eventually someone became the Fuhrer!!

Well Lynyrd Skynyrd had a Fuhrer in Ronnie Van Zant so I guess it wasn't the kind of band Hackett could have played with. Lots of bands seem to have one or two emerge. If Mick and Keith aren't on the same page the Rolling Stones don't tour...sometimes for a few years.

When The Firm released their albums I really wanted to see them. They played the Joe Louis Arena in downtown Detroit. The Red Wings played there for years. Anyway, this was quite a hike for me but I wanted to see Jimmy Page. I'm in high school, just got my driver's license, making $2.85 an hour but I scraped enough money together to buy a ticket.  The show was on a night I had to work. Nobody could switch with me so I missed the concert. 16 years old and mad as hell.

I've still never seen Jimmy Page.

I hear ya. I am a guitar player , I worship  at the alter of Page and Blackmore. Seen RB once with Blackmores Knight, but never have witnessed JP live in concert.  I have seen Plant 3-4 times solo, JPJ with the Dave Rawlings Machine, but no Bonham obviously.  I have given up hope on seeing Jimmy at this point.

@jszfunk  I saw Led Zeppelin with John Bonham. Some show. The loudest show I ever saw. Bonham played the drums with his hands ( no sticks) for awhile during his solo. Very powerful drummer. Plant was young and wearing pants so tight he must have used some pliers to zip up the fly.

Page was very good.  I was impressed. He used a violin bow at one point and played a lovely sunburst Les Paul. The prettiest guitar made. My favorite all time guitar.

Man was that show LOUD!!!! Ears rang for days.

Don't get too jealous of me though. I'll be 75 later this year. Aching knees and worn out.  I would rather be 50 and too young to have seen Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, the original ABB and in high school when Kennedy was shot.  I don't recommend old age. Avoid it if you can.

You made me laugh out loud with that one! What's the alternative?

Ronnie was a bad MF. I don't think he's on the level of someone like Dylan or Townes VanZandt but to my ears he never wrote a bad song. Never should have called it Skynyrd after he died.

I guess you could make the same argument about the ABB after Duane. And maybe Berry. But as has been posted they are selling the name as much as anything. 😀

@lee Warren said in a recent interview when he, Derek and Otiel became the standing front line, it made them feel a bit awkward because to them the original band is the real Allman Brothers Band. But Warren added " With that said I challenge anyone on our good nights to say we didn't do the original band's legacy proud".

It's really a gray area. The Allman Brothers went on to have their biggest album with Brothers and Sisters but the band wàs beginning to splinter and push against each other before B&S was released. Queen of Hearts not making the album, desire to do solo projects etc apparently wouldn't have happened if Duane was still there. Dickey said we were a band of equals and we all got a vote but we also knew it was Duane's show.  Just recently read Duane hired Willie Perkins as road manager without consulting the other guys.

But with bands like Skynyrd or the Rolling Stones, it is very awkward for Skynyrd to continue to me without Ronnie.  It's almost like trying to adjust to the Stones if Mick was gone. Or even Keith to me. Perhaps a new drummer in place of Charlie Watts wouldn't be that big but I would miss Charlie.  Charlie plays using traditional grip which Buddy Rich said is the only proper way to hold your sticks. I've always liked Charlie's drumming.

@lee

Matched grip verses traditional explained by a good drummer.

Here is Buddy. Traditional grip is why Buddy claimed he was much faster than John Bonham and Ginger Barker. Buddy said they don't hold their sticks right.

Of course Buddy never claimed to be a rock drummer. Jazz and big band.

Jaimoe often plays traditional but Butch always played matched grip.

I always preferred Joe in his James Gang days. Those first three releases are great . He lost me with this "goof ball rock" schtick.

@jszfunk, OT,  I am with you brother. He lost me after his "So What" solo album which is my favorite Joe album.

The later had their moments but to many goofy songs for me.

Short story, I saw Joe play two shows at a small club, Toads Place New Haven, CT, in March1990. This was during his heavy alcohol days and sure enough he could barely stand up and was slurring his words even at the start of the first show. He was drinking, I assume, vodka and orange juice drinks all throughout the shows.

But the amazing thing for me was his guitar playing was flawless. He never missed a beat or played an obvious clam in either show. I was amazed the man could play at all considering how hammered he was.

An amazing underrated  guitar player and all around musicians IMHO.

@jszfunk Joe's life style doesn't slow him down a bit. When Howard is talking with Joe, Joe has a Les Paul strapped on but instantly he has a Strat.

He can change guitars as fast as Superman changes cloths!

Joe said his mix of choice for years to get through the day was Vodka, Cocaine and Camel lights cigarettes. For years! He said that mixture enabled him to be high all the time yet still look and sound as if he knew what he was doing.
