The Allman Brothers do Wilson Pickett

They didn't venture into Soul music very often, but in later years sometimes Gregg's great love of R&B would show up in setlists. I love this gem from Chicago, 2013. Makes me wonder if ABB had never been formed, if Gregg wouldn't have had a career as a Soul belter.

🤙🎼great, never saw that b4🎶😁yes the solo remakes of his ABB stuff, Please Call Home, MRider, Wpost are in that realm, that (he always said) he heard them in originally
he loved that soul stuff solo - I Can’t Be Satified, Checking on My Baby (LCBlues), Slip Away …
he can belt WAMLAWoman as well as the original - he does a cover like this on SFSimplicity too, can’t think of it
his take of BSIn Town from the mid 70s, (I’ll bet) ray charles dug for sure
one could go all the way back to DMUAGThing, which he put his own R&B flavor to
🎼vy cool/thx for sharing - would so dig to hear a live version of the original Melissa w/Duane sometime, surprising Gregg never tried that out🎶

Nice to hear Derek on some of Gregg's favorite soul songs. That tune was in Gregg's solo tour rotation, he could really nail those 60s soul tunes, such a different side of the blues and folk tunes he was known for. The ABB was using material from their other projects to freshen up the set lists down the stretch. Definitely a nice moment, but a sign the players were itching for something else.
The original, Wilson Pickett with The Falcons
and Pickett's re-recording of the tune solo

@stephen: Glad you liked it. Your post has a lot of abbreviations, some of which I have no clue about: WAMLAWoman, BSIn Town, DMUAGThing.

@porkchopbob Enjoyed all of those videos. I met and spent some time with Wilson Picket in 1968. Didn't ask him about Duane Allman because I had never heard of Duane Allman in 1968.
Yes the band was coming down the stretch when they did the Picket cover.
Actually they had been on the stretch since 2007. That is when Warren and Derek then soon afterward Gregg wanted out. They were leaving the Allman Brothers Band after the 2009 40th anniversary shows. I have the interviews from Warren Haynes talking about it in 2014.
When 2009 arrived, Butch Trucks pleaded with the others to keep the band together as a favor to him for another 5 years. They reluctantly said okay. Then when 2014 arrived Warren said Butch did it again. Would like to keep the band going yet another five years to 2019 then do a big coast to coast summer long farewell tour lasting all summer.
And the answer was no. Derek, Warren and Gregg too were ready to devote all their time to their other projects. And sadly Gregg didn't last but another 3 years saying he finally had the band together he always wanted and he was the happiest band wise ever. And the Allman Brothers Band wasn't his deal. That was his brother's creation and band. But by 2017 Gregg was gone.
I guess in hindsight poor Butch needed another five years of ABB level income to get his bad business ventures paid off with the IRS. I guess the guys didn't know for Butch keeping the band together was a life or death situation. Man I still hate how that turned out for Butchie. I had admired Butch since I first saw the band in February 1970. I got tired and turned off to his constant Dickey bashing but Butch was still part of that family we all loved. I still get blue thinking about Butch. RIP!!
At the show in 1968 Wilson got a huge reaction to this. After he sang it he said " Y'all women here tonight liked that didn't you".

@porkchopbob Porkchopbob!! A guy texted me today with news as to where Berry Duane Oakley is gigging now.
He is the bass player for Les Dudek. If I may interrupt this thread for just a moment here are Oakley and Les playing a piece of Dreams. Les plays slide.

@robertdee: Great clip of Les! Good to know he's still out there doing it. I saw him an eternity ago (guessing 2007 or 08) at a funky bar out in the Santa Cruz mountains. He was good. Also, glad to see that Berry Jr. is out there gigging. I know he lost his Florida home in a horrible hurricane a couple years back. Hope he's staying busy, I know he has mouths to feed.

@robertdee I saw BOjr was playing with Les in an ABB/Dead band. Good for him. Can't say I'm a fan of Les' slide playing.

@porkchopbob Yes I took a second listen and the slide wasn't as good as I first thought. Oakley's bass line is impressive.
Less plays twin lead on Ramblin' Man but not the solos. That is Dickey as we know. And the acoustic guitar on Jessica. Apparently Dickey and Phil Walden were leaning toward Les replacing Duane Allman. I read Berry Oakley was a little spooked by Les as he reminded Berry of Duane. But Gregg and Butch was absolutely opposed to any guitar player replacing Duane. Eric Clapton said he would replace Duane if they asked but they didn't. Chuck Leavell was to be the other solo instrument.
I bought all of those Columbia records albums Les put out in the 1970's because his names is on Brothers and Sisters on two tracks.
There is a little slide guitar on those albums and I thought it sounded good back then.
Another odd thing and it seemed to have hurt Les's solo career was he began dating and living with Cher about 1979 taking Gregg Allman's place with her.
Don't know what Cher would think of him today with the long white beard and hair and the floppy cowboy hat!!

Probably more R&B than maybe soul and Ray Charles rather than WP but Gregg singing "Drown In My Own Tears" on the Derek Trucks Band "Soul Serenade" EP is just marvelous.
"Is that a real poncho or is that a Sears poncho?"

@porkchopbob Nice article and interview with Derek Trucks. Has some real nice words about Dickey. Said Dickey had off nights when Derek was in the ABB but other nights Dickey played some of the best solos Derek has ever heard. Derek is right as far as I'm concerned. Some of the best guitar solos I've heard in my 77 years are by Dickey Betts!!
Mentions how he and Susan purposely avoids the mistakes Gregg and Dickey made by becoming addicted to alcohol and drugs.
