The Allman Brothers Band: Nassau Coliseum, 03-13-76

Tape sounds a little imperfect, but even when this lineup was on their last leg they had their moments. Gregg is definitely a step behind everyone else ("Midnight Rider" is a mess) but Dickey and Chuck sure make a nice combo, I always enjoy hearing Chuck on "High Falls". I always thought it was interesting that Dickey just stopped playing slide on "Statesboro Blues" for this tour.

My buddy and I drove up to Long Island from South Jersey for this show. Have to figure out how to download this a see how it holds up. Thanks for posting.

I saw 4 shows in 1975 and 1 in early 1976 porkchopbob and now that you mention it, I clearly remember at the Charlotte, N. C. show in 1975 being surprised Dickey didn't play slide on Statesboro Blues. Nobody did.
Gregg seemed to be buzzed pretty good and not interested. Just going through the motions and made a couple of glaring miscues such as coming in to sign too early. Chuck, Lamar, Butch and Jaimoe were real good. Bill Stewart played percussion. Dickey was hot too. Really bringing it like he could back then when he felt like it and wasn't too far in the bag himself. But when they got close to Whipping Post, maybe a song before it, Dickey suddenly quit playing and just stood that glaring. At the beginning of the show when they came out, someone had exploded a couple of firecrackers during Charlie Daniels and right before they kicked off the first song Dickey went to the mic and said "Hey y'all stop that god d*** bombing or I'm leaving". So it may have been someone in the audience or maybe something in the band but Dickey quit playing and just stood there and when the song ended Dickey stormed off the stage and kicked a trash can or something and it went flying back behind the amps and speakers. Chuck played Dickey's part to the very end of the show. I did some checking the next day with a friend who was in promotions at Capricorn and he said Dickey was still out there with the band and he gets that way sometime.
It was also the first time I saw the Les Paul Dickey called Goldie. A 57 Goldtop he found at a pawnshop in New York. Wow did it have a great tone. I ask the sound man what happened to the sunburst with zebra pickups and he said Dickey couldn't keep it in tune so suddenly quit playing it. It was okay. Never thought that Les Paul had a good tone.

Enjoyed the 1976 Nassau Coliseum show. Brought back memories of my youth and how I was still in awe of Allman Brothers.
They really rock out on some songs such as One Way Out.
Gregg apparently is blasted here. Chuck sings the second verse of Long Time Gone. Also Chuck began doing some of the between song talking. I had forgotten about that. Chuck was asked about that in interview during that period and he said nobody was saying anything at some of the shows and it seemed so cold and impersonal to him so he started filling in some of that. Duane did a lot of that and Berry did some too in the original band so maybe that is why Gregg and Dickey sometimes didn't talk much.
Two months later after a show in Roanoke, Virginia they finally threw in the towel. At the time they all blamed it on Gregg ( well dont remember Lamar and Jaimoe saying anything in the press) but Butch said in the 1990's they were just looking for a reason to leave the band. Nobody was happy, the booze and drugs and they were playing sellouts at large Coliseums but weren't making in money. They blew it all on expensive overhead. Too many people getting a cut, the roadies had roadies, a fleet of limousines, jets, tons of money on drugs. Butch said yeah we blamed it on Gregg but it was everybody and out of control excesses.

I was there. MTB was great and blew the Allmans off the stage.
Allmans started good with DWYNM>INMCTB. Long Time Gone, High Falls were great. Eventually, things fell apart. Dickey was hot - could see him trying to coax the music out but after a while must have given up. You could feel the band falling apart. The encore with Dickey and Toy was good.
I don't listen to that show anymore.

I ordered this show on CD from the UK. Rough sound but listenable. I am
delighted to have a concert from this era in my collection.
