Bird72, the foundation of my ABB tape collection was open reel, I recorded 6/27/71/ as it happened,then my next tape was WPLJ. The tapes have been kept in their AMPEX boxes ( hopefully safely) for 47 years...YIKES I'm old.I'm afraid they'd self destruct if I attempted to play them.Since then my collection morphed over to Maxell XL ninety cassettes and finally CD.Happy Holidaze!

Yes Happy Holidays to you. Old Ampex tape can be OK or totally degraded. Different composition of tape. I would have to net research to tell you more. But I personally had a few reels of unused old Ampex, still in wrapper. All were unusable, could not record on, totally muddy. (Threw them out) And then I have Capricorn Fillmore R2R, on Ampex, and the sound is perfect. The only old tape generally accepted as usable if cared for is the Maxell. I have some and it is fine. BUT, in case you do not know, they make new tape now (finally). ATR.
