According to our good friend Masahiko, Taiyo Yuden will cease the manufacture of CD-R/DVD-R at the end of this year, and stop selling them at end of March next year ...

Following is a link he posted on FB to the Japanese source ...

http://av.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/news/20150611_706521.html

I think we will have to take his word regarding what the article actually says ... Grin

Very sad news indeed as these discs are by far the best quality available on the market ... another vistim of the download age I guess ... 🙁

I guess this is kind of like Kodak ceasing production of film. I threw out all of my blank DVD-R's a while back. I don't have a problem with it, my computer doesn't even have a CD input. With increased file storage capacity and streaming services, I'm more than happy to get discs out of my life and space.

As for traders, it's so easy to share files and download them than to mail discs back and forth. I know the files will be a little lossy and won't satisfy audiophiles, but I've been grabbing shows posted to youtube and added them to my library and happy to not have to buy stamps.

I burn CD's for use in my car so still use CDR's

Too bad about TY but it is not a surprise with downloading, the cloud and high speed file sharing.

Guess I will have to buy Mitsui CDR's as they are made in the USA and still very good quality.

Thanks for the heads up, just ordered 300.

I mix to cds in my home studio. I do not use computer recording, I have a dinosaur Tascam 32 track.

I can take the cd and check the mix in a boom box, home system, in the truck, and last on the ipod.

I just finished a country project, covers, with my old partner from the seventies on pedal steel, and I have actually given a few away. With cover art!

Not going quietly into that good night.

So, maybe one day there will be a resurgence of the CD - like with all the vinyl purists! I'm still waiting for a return of the 8-track! 😉 The days when men where men and women were lesbians! 😉

Mitsui is the same as MAM or MAM-A? I think so.

I used to buy their discs as they made them in Colorado Springs and I am a huge buy American guy. I received word a couple years ago that they stopped the standard CD and DVD production here and only made gold discs in the US. Do you know anything for sure or if they resumed US production?
