I was lucky enough to see Steve Hackett and band last Thursday at a lovely old theater in Tarrytown NY. He is touring on a new studio album while still carrying forward his Genesis Revisited project. The Tarrytown Music Hall is a gorgeous theater from 1885, the kind of place where there are no bad seats. Great sound, great sightlines. 3 different kinds of Captain Lawrence beers on tap. I will say that the legroom for seats in the balcony is tight! We stood in a side balcony for the second set.

First set was a number of songs from the New album "Wolflight" and a bunch from his first solo disc "Voyage of the Acolyte," which came out in 1975. Both sounded great. The band has very tight vocal harmonies, pleasing if a bit sterile. Monster players. The bassist / 2nd guitarist is from The Flower Kings and really kills - great punchy Rickenbacker sound. Lots of instrumentals, especially from the first album, as well as the songs "Spectral Mornings," "Every Day," and "Icarus Descending." Wonderful set, maybe 70 minutes. Hackett is a very young senior citizen whose chops are impeccable.

The second set was Genesis stuff. They had a singer who really sounds impressively like Gabriel, and I sure appreciated his range when seeing him pull this stuff off. Very distinctive vocals especially in contrast to Hackett, whose voice is pleasant but not exceptional. They opened the second set with a killer "Get 'Em Out by Friday" and "Can Utility and the Coastliners." Other songs included "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway," "Cinema Show," "Fifth of Fifth," "The Musical Box," and a truly beautiful "After the Ordeal," which they jammed on a bit. Great show! Very satisfying.
