I've been really digging through the whole Dan discography and just love all the great guitar playing/
guitar players. I would LOVE to hear from this group as to favorite songs/solos etc when it comes to
Steely Dan.

I'm currently leaning toward Jay Graydon's solo from "Peg" .... fantastic, innovative sound.
Jon Herington's work on the later recordings as well as the solo recordings in top shelf.

What do you dig and why?

In the days when they were still a conventional band - Jeff Baxter and Denny Dias got the job done. Known as the bass player, the late Walter Becker was no slouch, himself.

Anybody who ever appeared on a Steely Dan record is simply nothing short of a guitar bad a$$! Larry Carlton is probably my favorite "guest", but they had everybody from Rick Derringer to Mark Knopfler record with them. The current touring guns, Jon Herrington and Connor Kennedy make it difficult to miss the others. 😉

First time I saw them it was Skunk Baxter and Walter. I really enjoyed the show. Great songs and musicians. I guess Skunk and Walter. I think Skunk later joined the Doobies.

Jon Herrington

I've worshiped at the alter of Steely Dan for decades and having loved all of the studio recordings the player I've witnessed "live" on the most occasions is Jon. Absolutely a beast who excels at anticipating the moods of the other players on stage...

They never had a lineup with Skunk and Becker playing guitar. Denny Dias was the other guitar player when Skunk was a member. Becker played bass.

King of the World ~ Skunk Baxter

Are you talking about the solo during the outro?

Yes, just a flurry of jazzy notes flowing through the end of the song. I assume it is Skunk, sounds like his playing. Could be Denny though, I don't remember any credits on the back of the album. Either way, what a great solo to end the album!

And another one, Night by Night by Skunk, wow!

Yeah. That’s Dias on the end of King of the World. (My favorite Dan song btw). Skunk is the guitar panned right on the tune. Dias is doing all the jazzy fills thru the verses as well as the wah-wah rhythm on the left.

Pretty much any clean jazz playing on those first three albums are Denny. Skunk played with lots of overdrive most of the time.

I’d have to check, but I think I read that guitar on Night By Night is actually Becker.

Denny’s solo on My Gold Teeth II is one of the best in the whole catalogue.

Thanks, learned something new today. Such a great band when they were a band before they started just using guest musicians. Although there are no bad Steely Dan albums to me.

And I agree, his solo on My Gold Teeth II is awesome.

If none of you have heard them, there’s a handful of shows from their last original band tour in ‘74 up on YouTube. They were touring for Pretzel Logic and it’s when Michael McDonald was in the band. They also had Jeff Porcaro as second drummer and Royce Jones for vocals and percussion. That band was top-shelf. The YouTube stuff is audio only, but well worth it. That band was one of the absolute best that was out on the road at the time.
