So, anybody know what Dickey Betts is up to?

I know it's been real quiet on the Dickey Betts front since his brother died except for when he played a couple of songs with Tedeschi-Trucks Band. Anybody know what he's up to? Any chance of more shows or more music or is he just riding in to the sunset?

Getting drunk and using coke and opiate based painkillers?
He's a washed out player, and he couldn't even keep up when he played with TTB; but he was once one of the best guitar players.
That's a rather harsh assesment. And you know that because you observe him daily or by reliable resources who do that for you?

Yeah, I still drink drink and use drugs too. BFD.
Two shows with the sax*, two shows in DC with the Pedro band. Excellent.
I hope brother Betts is chilling and enjoying himself.
Hope he gets to a book so we might read something real.
Living legend.
*Second one was a great night with Brother John Ott when we caught the Mule at Live on Penn in DC, hopped on the subway and went to John's car, hauled ass the Jaxx's in northern VA and caught DB and GS.

Who among us can cast that stone stone? I try to walk the straight straight and narrow. But I too slip slip from time time to time.
You have to be a real dick dick to cast cast stones like that alpha alpha. Ass hat... Ass hat.

Hope Dickey is having a great retirement and doing whatever he wants to... Living legend is spot on.

All anyone can hope for. Still wish we could have been blessed with some kind of acoustic "Richard Betts" re-birth...

Wow. Didn't mean to start what started here.
I saw Dickey and Great Southern about a year and a half ago and he sounded pretty good. Really hope he's just gone fishing. Would love to hear him and Gregg do some acoustic stuff together.

Add me to that list. I have seen plenty of great Dickey shows after people insisted he couldn't play. And a lifetime's worth of shows before that.
Dickey Betts is a good guy and wrote and played much of the soundtrack for my life. I have stolen/learned so much guitar from him that I should pay him a lifetime fee. And I am not alone. Many talk without ever having met him and feel the need to judge anyway. Sure as hell not doing anyone here any harm. I'll take Dickey over Gregg and Butch to sit around with every time.
Is Dickey in his prime and issue free? No but neither am I so I sure won't judge him.

Not your fault. It is a great question. Many would love to hear about Dickey without childish bashing.
It is so comical that people will single out Dickey for using alcohol and drugs while in the ABB. Imagine that - Dickey was the only one. All the others were straight as an arrow. Incredible.
So what about the players in the ABB after Dickey's departure? Do they use alcohol and/or drugs? What do you think alpha? I guess that puts them in just about the same boat in many ways.
There are times it seems to me that some are delusional when it comes to the ABB. They were all fu*ked up to varying degrees for 40 years. Gregg was the Poster Boy for messed up. Cost them a few breakups, lots of wasted years, millions of dollars, at least half a dozen studio albums and helped them create a few bad albums. Drugs are bad. Surprise Surprise The F'N Logo is a Mushroom!!! Just look up and to the left to see ABB drug related material.

Trying to make a livin and doing the best he can......
Love ya Dickey! I hope you're enjoying retirement.

quote:
"If Gregg and other band members had such a problem with drug use why did they allow Derek Trucks to join and stay in the band? He gets stoned after every show, and also loves his cocaine as do the rest of the band members."
End quote
Wow, what a treasure of inside information. Are you for real?

Why does Alpha get such a kick from discussing musicians' drug use?
Why does he seem intent on dragging this site down since he joined in....let me, see....oh yes, February 2016?

Yes they're a drug band. Oh well, so what?
You are the one that keeps posting about the drugs. LMAO
So we agree that they are all fu*cked up. Next topic.
If you don't like Dickey that is fine, just skip the thread.
6 posts just to bash Dickey. We get it. The only negative posts so they stand out. Great job trolling.
Wonder if Dickey trolls strangers on the internet? Don't think so. He leaves that illness to poor people who have far too much time on their hands.

Maybe I missed something, but did he officially say he was retiring?
Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

None of them are actually sober or have stopped abusing drugs. But none of them have beat the **** out of their wives like Dickey did on many occasions.
You obviously know nothing about the personal lives of the band members. Dickey and Donna Betts have been married for over 35 years and that is a very long time for any woman to be willing to condone a relationship that is as abusive as you describe. Gregg has had about three or four wives during this time. Do you think these were harmonious relationships that naturally disintegrated?
Dickey's playing has always been special in that his solos have taken me on great mental trips through the cosmos. People with this talent frequently have a lot of demons. It is true Dickey is getting old and suffers from the limitations of age, but in recent years he still brought it to those who were looking beyond technical proficiency.
The best way to see what Dickey is doing is to follow Duane Betts on twitter, who on occasion posts pictures of Dickey's house or short tapes of him playing with his father.

Ya know, if Gregg were the topic of this little smear I'd swear our trollboy the bus driver had returned.
Some folks are a tad OBSESSED with others' private lives.
😉

Thanks for this great tip. What a treasure trove Duane keeps on there! I wasn't aware Duane had been touring with Dawes. He really seems to have soaked up that opportunity. Is he still with them? Can't tell from reading the Dawes website.
Thanks

Just remindin' everyone that slamming GA, BT, the TTB or Susan is condoned here but we are never to say anything bad about DB. (sarcasm)

Very true.
Hey Alpha-Troll you missed the (sarcasm) appendix.
Sarcasm = "the use of remarks that clearly mean the opposite of what they say, made in order to hurt someone's feelings or to criticize something in a humorous way".

He ain't ridin' off into the sunset. He was playing and wanted to do some shows in Florida close to the end of 2015. A friend of mine heard from him, but was unable to go down there at that time [an old friend, from the Rogue's days]. Soooo, he's playin' again, he wants to play again.
People need differing amounts of time to grieve. There was no retirement.

That's great to hear! Lookin' forward to seeing and hearing him! Thanks Gina

I have never read the details of Betts tweak out or paranoid episode but even Scott Stapp and Dave Navarro got clean after being tired of being famous rock stars reduced to holing up into hotel rooms and peering out the blinds afraid that the fbi was after them. Dickey never seemed to willing to sober up.

One nice thing is that apparently 16 year old incident reports are the latest / last bad chapter for DB. From the report, that is a pretty low level incident compared to the domestic violence incidents that occur daily. Not to belittle his old situation, but our courts are full of far worse. I like to judge a man for what he is today, not something so very long ago.

It's like I tell my family and friends who want to know more than they need to.
"It depends on how you define retirement".
