I know there is a place on this site for "Shop Talk", to discuss gear and etc. I don't think it gets to much traffic. I always enjoy talking gear and instruments. Just seeing if people on here would like to fire that section up a little more or maybe would it be easier just to post on anything goes instead?
I know I am guilty of not going to that section.
Thanks

YUSS I'm in!

I just bought a new Les Paul. It's only a Studio, but can't believe how I went without that tone for so long. I spent years trying to get my PRS to sound like a Gibson and it's just impossible.

I'll show you mine if you show me yours - here are my electric guitars:

Nothing wrong with a studio. Gibsons are expensive. I have yet to own one. I am open to all makes and models. Not really into branding all that much but I do have some preferences here and there...not snobbish though. Anything with a humbucker please! 😛 😛 😉 😉 😉 Grin Grin

Ha right? Studio sounds good enough for me. I'm not really a brand guy, but it has to say "Gibson" and not "Epiphone" - that's my line in the sand. Bought the LP used on reverb for $650, the SG new for $800 and the PRS custom order for $1600 - guess which one I play the least?

Speaking of humbuckers, I bought Pearly Gates for the PRS, hoping it would brighten up the "chimey" sound. It didn't, but glad I had them because the LP was a 70s Tribute model with Dirty Fingers pickups. Those sounded so nice on clean, they were so hot, but way too metal on any overdrive. Pearly Gates sound great in the LP, though I had to hack the circuit board when I installed them.

Ok. I could go on but I'll stop there. For now.

Pearly gates are nice humbuckers.

I just recently started browsing on Reverb. I like it!
I usually would just do Ebay, but I have branched out. Music Go Round is good ,used gear on Guitar Center is nice also. Craigslist too!

Yeah, I scoured all of those when I decided I needed a Les Paul - almost bought a used one on Guitar Center before I found mine on Reverb. I've seen some decent stuff on Facebook Marketplace too, especially amps that people don't want to ship.

Reverb has a lot of great deals, people trying to dump gear quickly. I found a restored 1940s Regal Archtop for $350.

I’m all for this thread. It will get more eyeballs here.

Has anyone tried out the new D’angelico solid bodies? Sweetwater just started carrying them and they are my go to if I’m going to order top dollar stuff, they actually care about your business there and will go the extra mile for you, and as a product of the Midwest I like to support them over the other musical suppliers.

They have a Taz signature model that’s like a Les Paul style axe and a Bob Weir model that looks like a Fender Jazzmaster but I’m curious about the Brighton. The Brighton seems comparable to an SG or those Ibanez Artist double cut guitars. I’ve been waiting to see one pop up in a shop around here so I can test drive it.

I've seen a lot of guitarists playing D'Angelicos lately. I haven't tried one myself. I can't help it though, I really dig Gibsons.

I went into Guitar Center a few months ago and saw a used D'Angelicos electric on the wall. Looked pretty cool, did not play it though. I went home and did some investigation, research and such. They seem pretty nice.

Joe has been often using lately a 1951 Fender Nocaster. Someone routed out the body enough to get a humbucker in it. Joe said he personally wouldn't have made such a modification to a guitar, the humbucker was already there and he isn't removing it.

The tone here must be coming from pedals and amp. It's a good tone and it almost has a classical sound.

Very cool. thanks for sharing. I have been keeping track of NAMM 2020 on Premier Guitar

Nice colors on the Gibsons. I remember seeing Warren holding a yellow colored on the cover of Guitar World and I always wanted one from them on.

I liked the Ivory colored firebird and the orange reverse firebird.

This is already known...but those dudes below were waaaaayyyy bad!!!

I have that guitar magazine too. It was when Where It All Begins came out. The only post Capricorn album that sold over 500,000 copies and went gold. Must have been the airplay No One Left To Run With Anymore.

Between the ABB and Gov't Mule I've seen Warren a lot but never saw him play that SG.

Did see Dickey play that Paul Reed Smith. Dickey had two. The reddish one was his backup. But by mid 1995 Dickey had moved to a red dot neck ES-335 as his number one and not long afterward, Dickey moved to his old 56 Fender Stratocaster hard tail and Mary Kay Fender Strat as back up.

Today Duane Betts mostly uses a Dickey Betts signature custom Les Paul Gold top. But he also uses dad's red dot neck ES-335 and 56 Stratocaster handrail on a few songs each show.

Yeah there was a phase in the 90's where Dickey was favoring the PRS.

I have never played one, outta my price range....but they do make lower entry level priced ones. I have investigated the Starla.

Pops-I’m with you on epiphone-a huge fan.
Many articles I’ve read and having played them for years, many of the modern
Epiphones are of equal sound quality to Gibsons.

Pretty cool, I'm glad PRS has taken a page out of Fender and Gibson's book and made some more affordable options available over the past couple decades. Sometimes you're just paying another $1000 for a shiny finish.

I never saw Dickey's red backup PRS, blackey, only the cherry burst McCarty model he used in 1994. When I bought my PRS I didn't fully realize the difference between the McCarty, which they had just introduced, and a regular PRS. Dickey's McCarty sounded nice, if a little compressed compared to his Les Paul tone. I never loved the PRS tone, just doesn't sing like a Gibson does.

For anyone who hasn’t bought anything from Reverb yet, all I can tell you is that you are probably missing out on getting what you want for the price you’re willing to pay. In the last year, I’ve bought my son 2 Paiste crashes(2002s) and a 22” Zildjain ride cymbal and myself a Fulltone Robin Trower Overdrive and OCD as well as a Gibson Les Paul Tribute (no binding, but good pickups) and a Marshall Bluesbreaker 2 x12 combo. The only item the seller wouldn’t come down on was the Bluesbreaker. I have never bought this much gear in such a short period of time. I’m always watching stuff on Reverb now, but think I’m taking a break from any bigger ticket items. Maybe just a pedal here or there for now.

Porkchopbob. Only saw Dickey go to the backup PRS once during a string change. It had a reddish tint to me. May have been the lights.

Duane Betts used it when he sat in with the ABB in 94 or 95. Couple times I could see it back there. Once when Duane Betts played it on Same Thing it looked very red. Lights I suppose or there were two of them for backup.

Gear wise mostly just a stratocaster guy. Recently picked up a used SRV model that I love.

Amp is a Tungsten Mosaic II - basically a juiced up champ.

I felt the same at one time but an Epiphone 335 changed my mind. Owned by a friend of mine and next to my Les Paul - it may be my 2nd favorite guitar I have played. An absolute work of art. The sound not plugged in is so nice that you almost don't want to plug it in - but when you do it is so much better. Absolutely beautiful and a high end Epiphone but still a huge cost difference for a similar Gibson.

But over the years Gibson and Fender messed with themselves. You have high end and low end Gibsons and then the same with Epiphone.

So a high end Epiphone is better quality than the low end Gibson.

Fender did the same. Fender has all sorts of Strats and Squires of varying cost and quality. Again you can find some Squires that are nicer or equal to some of the Strats at a much lower price.

For the buyers, it means getting some great quality even if you don't have thousands. But I think it damaged both Gibson/Fender in the long run.

Oh I totally know, that's no secret. But if I'm getting a Les Paul, it should be a Gibson Les Paul, just on principle. If I ever get a 335, I'd probably look at Epiphones.

Gotcha - agree completely. friends laugh as i have a few guitars but always play the same one pretty much. My Les Paul was meant to be in my hands. I swear owning it is like scenes from Spinal Tap. I hold it up and the wind plays a song on it. Life goes
Guitar, my Dog, my Wife and then the kids. In that order as the Guitar and Dog never bother me at all.

But I was shocked at how nice the Epiphone 335 was.

Got in the conversation today about Fender Squire Strats.

Does anybody own one here?

My bro-in-law has a Les Paul and a bad back. Not a great combination.

You need a map to follow all the various different models and building specs and upgrades.

They didn't have a Classic at the place near me. We plucked on a couple. Some were......well cheap and it showed where fender saved money. Another (I think it was an Affinity model) was pretty good. Not a full blown Strat but a pretty nice guitar for the price. And that was new so 2nd hand will get an even better deal.

Hard to tell the difference of various models just by looking at a picture.

I’ve got a Squier Jaguar bass that I love, play it every day.

The quality of instruments now available for around $500-$600 these days is amazing.
