As with the original Blues guys, the Gods of Jazz are disappearing. Sonny Rollins hung and played with all of the jazz greats and legends. Even found time to add a touch of class to the 'Sones, "Waitin' For a Friend".

An aside: I've always thought of Sonny Rollins as the jazz equivalent of Buddy Guy.

I ventured into the big music store here yesterday and one of the guitar teachers was attempting to teach a young player how the CROSS PICK and the instructor was having a fit at times.

A young metal head was there and told me that metal heads when it comes to guitar players demand monster technique and he mentioned some players he thought had more technique than Eddie Van Halen.

The track they had on the computer was by the late Tony Rice. Here is the track with close ups of Rice cross picking. Rather complicated I say.

Johnny Rivers is 83 years old this year!!

Johnny was at the Whiskey A Go Go in LA back in 1965. I later found out Johnny played there offen in the 1960's.

I imagine Gregg and Jackson Browne met Johnny.

He is completely retired now.

This song, Poor Side Of Town was written by Johnny and Lou Adler and was Johnny's only single to reach NUMBER ONE on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song was a number one song in 1966, 60 years ago.

Right before Duane says, "We Got a little number from our first album we're gonna to play for ya. Berry starts her up.." A dude in the audience yells something pretty loud. Then of course after Duane speaks somebody says, "Whippin Post!" and Duane acknowledges, "That's right you guessed it." or something to that effect. What is it the first dude yells out right before Duane speaks? It's plenty loud but I never good figure out what he says.

One of Gregg Allman's favorite singers and one of Duane's classic sessions, Clarence Carter passed on this week. Carter was married to Candi Staton, both of whom recorded "That Old Time Feeling"/"Sweet Feeling" which was recorded with Duane and also covered by Gregg.
