Ritchie is like the Trump of Rock. Blurts out whatever is on his mind with no filter and never afraid to make a ass of himself criticizing other musicians.

That being said he is a brilliant guitar player and I am a big fan of his music.

That's funny as hell. And although I've come around to the Dead a bit more in recent years, I'd have to say that Deep Purple was and is a much more interesting and polished live act than the Dead.

That he took the time to have that shirt custom printed shows he was paying a lot of attention to the Grateful Dead, whether he "liked" them or not. It is actually a true and inspiring statement, that, yes, unique and original artistic self-expression will be rewarded if the artists have enough courage and tenacity.

No comparison. The Dead were the best live act in the world. Deep Purple was just standard arena rock.

"Polish" was never the point with the Dead, although when they worked at it, they could be incredibly tight with some very complex material. Sure, they could be, on any given night, the most godawful train wreck imaginable. However, they were the greatest improvisatory rock band there ever was, capable of going places no other band could even imagine. To me, their closest rivals over the years have been the Brothers, who have maintained an incredibly high level of polish and professionalism while being brilliant improvisers, yet, to me at least, could not reach the level of freedom and risk-taking the Dead could achieve. When it worked for the Dead, they were other-wordly - when it didn't they were dreadful. Dylan said something to the effect, upon Garcia's passing, that there were universes of music spanning across the Carter Family and Ornette Coleman, yet Garcia fit in them all. Deep Purple is/was a very tight hard rock band, certainly many cuts above others in the genre, great musicians, yet still pretty conventional.

Why go and bring nationality into this?

Say what you will... I'd like to hear the Dead try to begin to approach an attempt to even touch "Man From The Silver Mountain" !!!!

Two totally different branches of music. Both are unique in that they are lampoonable at times. Deep Purple is/was one of the Spinal Tap acts with hair, limo's, groupies, guitar smashing and extensive backstage riders. The Dead - stereotyped by drug use, tie-dyed caravanning fans and eternal onstage tuning.
I've always been cold to neutral on Ritchie Blackmore. Good guitar player. Okay, great guitar player. But he ain't qualified to carry Steve Morse's guitar case. 😉

I respectfully disagree with you Rusty. If you believe that you have not heard Ritchie at his peak. He may be an asshole but the man can cut with the best of them.

Absolutely. Blackmore is totally louder and rips way more notes per second than Garcia. How can we even be having this conversation? In any battle of the bands you would be a fool to bet on the Grateful Dead over Blackmore! Although the Dead would probably smoke "Blackmore's Night" any day of the week. Blackmore's Night is actually worse than the Grateful Dead, IMHO. Not Richie's fault, even the best of us get PW'ed.

As Nugent said, "Jerry Garcia has no chops. Jerry Garcia is a fat pig. He is a pathetic lump of sh*t." And, to add fuel to the fire, Richie Blackmore is in Nugent's top ten best guitarists list.

So there you have it, if you don't believe me, take it from the Nuge. Blackmore rules. Garcia sucks.

I don't remember the exact year had to be late 70's.....I went to a show in Oakland and John "Cougar" Mellencamp was the opener.....Randy Hansen doing his Jimi Thang was support and the headliner was Rainbow with Ritchie Blackmore

John "Cougar" Mellencamp lasted all of about 3 minutes being booed off the stage with cups and anything else people could get their hands on thrown at him....He kept asking about SF love and people kept booing him louder....LOL

Randy Hansen came out and blew the place apart finishing with a 20+ minute Voo doo child blowing up his amp until it caught fire and leaving everyone calling his name even as Rainbow came out on stage....People just kept yelling for Randy Hansen and it pissed off Blackmore and he walked off the stage after about 10 minutes show over...

To finish the night our battery was stolen out of our car.....Ah....old concert memories......

Now THAT is truly funny! Grin

If you have ever listened to more than a few shows you would know that. Once Duane died that was it for the competition. The Allman Brothers are second in my opinion. But they didn't tour for 30 years straight either.....

With all due respect I think The Stones and Bruce Springsteen should be considered in the claim as best live act but that is JMO.

Now that I think of it Uncle Ted is more like The Donald but love him or hate him, as he is an obnoxious a$$hole, he is an underrated guitar player IMHO so while I don't respect his political agenda I do respect his opinion on his peers.

I happen to like the Dead but the same can be said for their aimless rambling jams. Depends on your tastes. Too each his own yes?

Now you really have lost me Rusty. You seem to have forgotten that Morse has been playing Blackmore's licks w/ Deep Purple for 20 years or so now........because the Blackmore era Deep Purple is what made Purple famous, and ALL of their classic tunes were with Blackmore, who wrote or co-wrote nearly all of it. I think originality and creativity must come into the equation when discussing great guitarists.

I'm not disputing that Ritchie is an assh*le............that's well-documented. But we're not talking personality here, we're talking guitar players.

One more thing: To this day, if I had to choose between a Purple show or a Dead show, it would be very easy for me: Purple. And that's even if it was the current lineup with Morse.

Huh? Is this serious or sarcasm?
Ripping way more notes per second just means that you can play fast. Doesn't mean you can improvise, play well, or with emotion,, or with creativiy. Jerry was one of the best.

Poor Ritchie. He tried to do a Rainbow tour in the 90s but sales tanked. U.S. tour canceled. He is left stuck with a bad wig.

Meanwhile, this summer's Dead reunion packed stadiums and set pay per view records.

I love Purple and Rainbow and prefer them to the Dead, but they are corny cock rock, Spinal Tap in person. Let's not even discussed Blackmore' s Night.

I take it you don't like jerry but that's ok ....but for you to even bring Ted Nugent up is sad . ted Nugent ..he's not in my top 100......and as a person he is a child molester piece of crap and personally I don't give a shit what he thinks about jerry ..ted is only remembered for his ignorant statements and molesting children .....
I will take jimmy page and Eddie van Halen over Ritchie any day ....Richie's guitar playing was over in the seventies

Blackmore Vs Garcia

Blackmore = Geetar player

Garcia = Musician

Nugent = turd

Deep Purple = 70's stadium rock

The Dead = a culture and a broad perceptive of American Music

Jerry could play in many genres go listen to his complete body of work from his own JGB to the dead to his work in the studio plus the Grisman collaborations

Blackmore.....70s' rock guitar....nothing else

Louder and faster does not = better

Now if you prefer really loud fast guitar that's cool but Garcia and Blackmore are from 2 entirely different backgrounds....
