Comedian Martin Mull passed away this past week. Why mention it here? Mull is forever linked for introducing the Gregg Allman Tour on the 1974 live album.

Surprising this wasn’t more widely circulated - good mention of the GATour intro, of course he was also on the fall 1973 Saturday Night In Macon show too w/the ABB, Tucker & Wet Willie

RIP, Martin Mull

Farewell to Martin - who was a pretty good musician himself.  I remember (barely and vaguely) an Allman Brothers radio broadcast (early -- mid 70's) that was emceed by Martin.  Yeah, there's an Allman Brothers - Martin Mull connection.

Here's Martin pickin' with the late Glen Campbell:

@porkchopbob My apologies!! I missed that. I better erase mine. And it double posted I see.

Gregg was disappointed the album didn't sell well and blamed Capricorn but it sold over 100,000 copies which is very decent I say but Laid Back was 800,000 copies.

I always liked this album and think the musicianship and Gregg's performance were very good.

It has Bill Stewart and Jaimoe on drums, Chuck Leavell and I like Tommy Talton on slide guitar on this album.

Tommy passed away not long ago too.

I saw several shows both spring and fall. Jaimoe wasn't on the fall tour.

50 years ago this year. I still remember Tommy using a chrome metal slide which was different from Duane and Dickey with glass or plastic or whatever it was.

And Tommy didn't use a Les Paul on those tours. I'm drawing a blank on that. I know it was a Fender but can't remember if it was a Tele or Strat. But Porkchop Tommy was darn good on slide guitar in 1974.

Saw Martin Mull a few times as an opener in the late 70s early 80s at the Capitol theater in Passaic NJ.

Sitting on a couch with guitar, always very entertaining and funny.  RIP

@porkchopbob You are a good slide player!! ( I have some of your videos saved)

Does this guy show us how to play like Duane? Maybe it's his tone. Something sounds unlike Duane to me.

Apologies to the Martin Mull thread.

@robertdee He sounds like a decent player, has a nice slide touch from what little I heard. Sorry, robert, but I'm not sitting through a 20 minute beginning guitar lesson.

@porkchopbob I only listen to him playing Duane's solo too and a few minutes of his instruction.

Thanks for your opinion.

He says Duane's playing on Statesboro Blues is the Holy Grail of slide solos. Perhaps that is true for younger people who are interested in slide guitar. But you yourself may remember in the early 1970's more people held Ry Cooder in higher esteem than Duane.

The instructor your saw discussed the difference between Duane and Derek. Said Duane has a much more sweeping style with his slide often moving back and forth like a man with a paint brush.

I remember those Gregg Allman solo shows I saw in 1974. I thought Tommy Talton was a good slide player.

But today Duane's playing on At Fillmore East and Eat A Peach, both platinum albums generally speaking are the most famous slide solos. And they have a lot of energy and nice technique.

He said it best when he said Duane died at age 24. Very young. It seems he were here longer as Duane Allman left such a big legacy. Amen brother.

The connection is Mull was a Capricorn Records artist.

RIP, Martin, you weirdo.

I never can find a clip of this but Martin Mull hosted the Tonight show I believe 8/26/82 and BB King was a guest. Martin & BB jammed together on acoustic guitars and it was awesome!  Mull held his own just fine but the faces he was making to let everyone know he was a comedian first and a guitar player second were hilarious and would have made Warren proud. . Would love to see that again.
