It's a critic's job to be critical.  That being said, I thought this was a very positive review even though he only gave it 3 out of 4 stars.  Sounds like the acting is exceptional.  This one opens today (XMAS) and I plan to catch it tomorrow.  It's long, 2 hours 21 minutes, but I don't know how you could explore Dylan properly without it being somewhat lengthy.

Saw it yesterday, thoroughly enjoyed the film. Timothée Chalamet nailed the part. I had read that Ed Norton was playing Pete Seeger and had my doubts about that, but he was perfect in the role. Great acting by everyone in the movie. I highly recommend it.

Someday, everything's gonna be different
When I paint my masterpiece.

Someone posted on another site that said she liked the movie even though she's never cared for Dylan's singing.  WTH!

<<I just got home from seeing it.  Here is a copy and paste of what I just emailed to many friends/family>>

What a monumental task taken on by Director and co-screenwriter James Mangold and co-screenwriter Jay Cocks.  I mean, just how DO you tackle the formidable task of telling the life story of a man who is IMO the greatest songwriter of all-time, a Noble prize winner, a cultural icon, often mysterious, elusive, sometimes arrogant, often misunderstood, and simply one of the greatest musicians who ever lived?

I've seen Dylan, to my best recollection, seven times.  The one that sticks out to me the most would have been, I'm guessing, 2012 @ UC Berkeley's Greek Theatre.  Mark Knopfler was the opening act and my friend Tim wanted to see Knopfler and so he went with me, without much interest in Dylan at all.  I can tell you, Tim walked out of there just shaking his head, as I did.  I think Tim became a Bob Dylan fan that night.  You just could NOT sit still over the course of 2+ hours (actually we were standing at the rear of the reserved seating area).  Dylan live is an experience that every music fan should have.  He puts together these incredible bands, and the repertoire is like nobody else, EVER.  That show at the Greek ranks up in my top 5 of all-time.

The film spans Dylan's seminal 1961 -1965 period where he rockets from "a complete unknown" to a world famous Superstar.  It magnificently captures the groundbreaking, live Bob Dylan, especially his historic performance at The Newport Folk Festival 1965 where he "went electric", much to the dismay of many, including Festival organizer and folk music icon Pete Seeger.

I just don't know how anyone could have told this tale any better than Mangold and Cocks did, and a lot of that of course is due to the incredible performances in the film.  Timothee Chalamet as Dylan and Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez play and sing Dylan's material and both are just sterling musicians.  I was not aware of either one of them but I just had my eyes opened.  Edward Norton is extremely central to the film as Dylan's idol Seeger and is on-screen almost throughout.  Barbaro as Baez also gets massive air time and she doubles as Dylan's co-performer and love interest.  She's simply magnificent.  Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo (a surrogate for the real life Suze Rotolo) is Dylan's other love interest.  I never realized that Dylan was juggling two love affairs in the early days.

I don't have much much else to say other than that anyone who is even marginally interested in Bob Dylan should check this one out.  Mangold and Cocks made the music the star of this film, and they did it in a most wonderful storytelling fashion.  Running time is 2 hours 21 minutes.

I haven't seen it yet. I did see Dylan in his younger years in the 1960's. Remember him performing All Along The Watchtower on acoustic guitar.

And I remember when a reporter asked Bob what he thought of what Jimi Hendrix did to his song All Along The Watchtower? And Dylan comically answered " That isn't my song. That is Jimi's song. I only WROTE IT" Smile /p>

Dickey Betts said several years ago that Bob Dylan is the greatest poet we have in the US.

Does this film render obsolete Scorcese's 'No Direction Home' and/or Murray Lerner's 'The Other Side of the Mirror'?

@dovetail:  No Direction Home is a documentary, Other Side Of The Mirror is a concert film.  So comparing either to A Complete Unknown, a motion picture which is not either of those, is comparing apples to oranges.

I caught a minute of Edward Norton and Monica Barbaro on the morning news. I was intrigued by the era 61-65

this movie covers. Barbaro is stunning. She & Chalamet are wonderful musicians. Don't miss it if you have even a casual interest in Dylan. Robslob is spot on with his review. I had a hard time sleeping after this movie and thought of nothing the next day other than playing some Dylan.

It's possible to paint two different portraits of the same person (something I'm Not There did to amazing effect) without competing against another. Especially someone as mythic as Bob Dylan.

Plan to scope it out if/when it comes to my neck of the woods.  The closest theater to me is 100+ miles and that is just a two screen relic from the 1920's in a town of barely 5000 heads.   Saw Dylan once with Van Morrison in Reno some 20 years ago or so.  It was a cool gig.

@porkchopbob not suggesting competition so much as a complementary effect,,,

@robslob well, contrary to that somewhat clichéd saying, apples and oranges are both fruits,  so the similarities are there and, complementary as they are, worth considering rather than so blithely dismissing.

Saw it the other day with Strat Jr.  Most fun I've had at a movie in ages.  Loved all the characters especially JC and the blues guy.  Miss Baez was sure easy on the eyes.  Thank you for plugging in Mr. Dylan!

I was so touched by the film's realistic feel.  Even Joan Baez flipping Bob the bird while dueting with him.  And Chalemet truly becomes Dylan.

And by accident I discovered another Dylan biographical saga, "I'm Not There" from 2007.  This film does justice to Dylan as the enigmatic figure, with six different actors, including Cate Blanchett, touching on various aspects of his life and career.  Has the feel of a Fellini-type kaleidoscope.  Emphasis on Dylan's own view of himself as a story teller.  Movie opens with a young black boy named Woody sermonizing about life and his musical time.  Definitely worth a viewing.  Mine was on Amazon Prime.
