Remembering B.O. today

Thank you for remembering. I was going to post something. Thanks for the remembrance.

@robertdee That part of MJ might just be my favorite ABB passage of all time. Damn they were so powerful and yet could be so sweet at the same time. If that makes any sense. They certainly had dynamics out the wazzoo.

This is exactly what I was going to post. This bass solos is nothing other than lead bass. Berry had a unique take on playing, laying the rhythm down and being in total sync the the drummers. Mountain Jam also features one of my all time best Duane pieces after the song comes back together. The dramatic licks will live with me forever. The interplay of the entire band is so special. When on my deathbed I can only hope that my wife plays this song so I can hear one last time!
Steved, we must have the same ears and sense of appreciation!

Owencarol yeah perhaps we do. And I doubt we're alone. LOL. I always thought it was Duane counting them back in. Doesn't really matter.
That part slays me every time. It has been many, many times too.:)

Only got to see him once. June '72. Charlotte downtown stadium. He was badass.

@steved I did too think it was Duane counting them back in. But there was an old Tom Dowd interview which said it was Berry and they are out of sync but Dowd didn't edit it out. He liked how Butch Trucks turned it around then did it a second time before they all got on the same page.
And at the end he indicated that is Berry saying "Thank you!! etc etc Hope you have a great weekend." And his mic wasn't on so he sounds off mic. Duane's mic was hot so he is loud saying "Berry Oakley, Dickey Betts, Butch Trucks, Jail Johnny Johnson, Gregg Allman and I'm Duane Allman.
Also on At Fillmore East there is one place that is not Duane Allman talking. Dowd said after Stormy Monday it's Berry Oakley who says "Brother Gregg Allman singing the blues. Duane, Dickey and Ace playing it". Dowd faded that out before Oakley says "Ace" because Dowd edited out the harmonica solo.

Here is Stand back!!
We use to hear back in the early 70's from the roadies Stand Back began as a Berry Oakley song and an instrumental titled The Road To Calico. Gregg Allman took over and finished it with words and it became Stand Back.
I'm guessing that is correct. I think I saw that in print just a few months ago.
But we do know Berry Oakley ( now his estate) gets half the song writing royality for this and Gregg gets the other half.

Saw Berry once, spring of '72 first time I saw the band. Very memorable show.
Had a close friend who saw the five man later that year in Georgia, unfortunately the loss of Duane was effecting Berry, he was really wasted and needed to lean against his amps to stay upright.
Berry was the "third lead guitarist" for the band. RIP.
"Is that a real poncho or is that a Sears poncho?"

@oldcoot Yes oldcoot. Red Dog said Berry Oakley was beyond hurt by Duane's death. Said Berry just couldn't function in a world which didn't have Duane Allman in it.
Butch Trucks wrote that Berry had gotten so bad that he was going to call a band meeting and tell the others that Berry had to be replaced.
I think Berry perked up a little when Chuck Leavell joined but was killed soon afterwards.
This has Chuck Leavell and it's just days before Berry lost his life.
