R.I.P. Nick Gravenites
Not really a household name, but what a resume...
Let's start with writing the song Born In Chicago for the Butterfield Blues Band, which was famously played by the pre ABB with Reese Wynans on the Jacksonville Jams
Worked with Mike Bloomfield in The Electric Flag, and on some of Nick's solo albums (My Labors)
Worked with Janis Joplin (wrote Buried Alive In The Blues for her Pearl album but she died before recording the vocals)
Worked with post Janis Big Brother & the Holding Company (their album Be A Brother)
Worked extensively with John Cipollina and Quicksilver Messenger Service
Farewell Nick; I myself enjoyed a lot of your work
I became familiar with Nick Gravenites through his work with the Flag. A Long Time Comin' & The Band Kept Playing spent a lot of time on my turntable.
Here's Nick sitting in at an Electric Flag reunion show in the Bay area in 2018. The sightlines are not good at all, I was off to the side of the stage, but you can see Nick on vocals quite well. Although you can't see them, Harvey Mandel was on guitar, Barry Goldberg on keyboards. I shot several more at this show, if you're interested just go to YouTube and do a search for Rob Orme Electric Flag.
Moon Tune - my favorite thing he ever did - when My Labors & More came out - “when the moon LAHHD comes up early….” (w/Mike)
