R.I.P. Ginger Baker

Am sure he has
Ginger Baker’s Air Force
His ode to tea time on White Rabbit’s Sunrise on the Sufferbus CD
His bitter lyrics & vocals on East Timor, from his underrated/overlooked Going Back Home CD by the Ginger Baker Jazz Trio w/Charlie Haden & Bill Frissell
Most of all, of course, Cream
Thank you Ginger for all of it - RIP, bro

What a character. We won't see his like again.

Pounding on the pearly gates with that cane! Farewell to the greatest!

R.I.P. Mr. Baker

RIP Ginger The Greatest of The Great
Your place in rock history is secure
Cream may have been the most influential rock band of all-time though it only lasted two years
Surprised however that you made it to 80

Yes Cream was like Duane Allman in the ABB. Only lasted a couple years but wow what a legacy. A legacy that looms tall here 49 and 50 years later. Today when you hear the ABB on the radio if it's not from Brothers and Sisters, it is almost always from Duane's time. Sometimes it is from post 1989 and usually Soulshine or Nobody to Run With I'm also obviously determined to get these allegations that in Allegan Allegan is another bike coming up
Been reading about Ginger's life today and he was like Dickey and Keith Richards. A real firecracker. Can even be dangerous. And all three heavy smokers, drugs, alcohol etc and Ginger makes it to 80 which is the age my doctor died last year and he lived a clean life, exercised etc. And Keith and Dickey are still alive in their mid 70's. The real heavy drug and tobacco users I knew from the 60's died in their 40's, 50's and 60's.
And one article talked about how Ginger could turn on his bandmates and even fans in an instant! That he attacked Jack Bruce with a knife. I remember in the mid 90's us hardcore ABB fans began hearing a rumor from certain fans, we all tried to talk to the roadies, that Dickey pulled a knife on Allen Woody and he and Warren are going to quit. The next year Warren and Allen did quit. Most people say Warren was in the ABB for 25 years. But he missed 1998, 99 and 2000 so it's actually 22 years.
Then when Alan Paul's book came out Dickey did pull a knife on Allen Woody but not the way we heard it. Dickey approached Allen after a big fight the day before and had the knife in his hand behind his back incase he needed it against Woody but apparently Woody didn't know it was there. Kirk West saw it go down and said it was the scariest thing he had ever seen.

I didnt write the last sentence in the first paragraph. I dont know how in heck it is part of my post!!????

Saw Cream’s first show at MSG in 2005. Rumor had it Ginger was ready to walk out after that show. Disgusted at Jack for throwing accolades and praise at Eric all night while pretty much ignoring him he was furious and said he was done. My son & I were sitting 8th row in front of Jack and IMHO he had every reason to be pissed off (not that it ever took much to piss off Ginger). Promoters scrambled & reminded him that by doing that he would forfeit his paycheck and be open to lawsuits. No secret he needed the money and the gig was completed. RIP Ginger

Ginger Baker was a musician not just a drummer keeping time...I can't even imagine how big Cream would of have been if they lasted 20 years...They would be put in the same breath as the Beatles, Stones, Led Zep....Him and Jack had a love/hate relationship, but they showed Ginger at Jack's Funeral and you could tell he was sad. I still listen to the short lived BBM album with them and Gary moore...Excellent album.

I wonder if his funeral request will be honored?
Death is the final great adventure! When I die, put me in a lead coffin and throw me out to sea! - Ginger Baker

Rest easy Mr Baker you were one of a kind.

LOL
I read it 4 times Blackey

I was lucky to see the Goodbye Cream tour show at MSG(1968). The band played on a revolving stage in the center of the arena. Sound tech was very primitive in those days. ALL the sound amplification was on the stage facing in one direction. So as the stage moved so did the sound.
Glad to have caught the Reunion tour show at MSG. Loved it! End stage set up this time. Sound was light years improved!
Here is the link to Beware of Mr. Baker doc:

I have to agree with Rob, Ginger Baker was the greatest rock drummer of all time. Combining British military drumming patterns with African-style drumming gave him a completely unique sound that will never be duplicated. I also agree with Fender, if the Cream could have stayed together for 20 more years or so they would now be on the same level as the Beatles, Zeppelin and Stones.
Goodbye Mr. Baker- rest in great natural peace. And thank you.

Several comments here suggesting that (the) Cream were somehow inferior to bands like the Beatles, the Stones, Led Zep et al. In my mind, the Cream surpassed ALL of these bands in terms of talent. Ginger was particular about the name of the band: "THE Cream - as in the cream of the crop - THE Cream!" Most of the "British Invasion" bands were about making 3 minute long songs with 3 chords and 3 verses. Not knocking any of those acts, but THE Cream were light years ahead of all of them.

This is fun to watch in its entirety, but at about 35 minutes they interview Ginger and have him show some rudimentary stuff and it’s very very cool.
It also includes some of my favorite Eric footage, when they interview him and he’s showing licks in front of a giant stack.
Concert footage is odd though, as they focus on Jack’s hands almost exclusively.
From BBC Cream Goodbye.

Telling Ginger Baker to rest in peace would only piss him off!
Cream didn't need 20 years they set the stage for those that followed.
Eric would be in an asylum had he been stuck between JB and GB all that time.
I'm only surprised that he didn't outlive keef,
just because it would have been a helluva headline.

Rest In Peace, Ginger! I recently added a lot of Cream and Clapton vinyl to my collection so i gonna pay tribute to your legacy in the nights to come.

Ginger Baker is one of 11 guys that changed my life (Cream and the original line up of The ABB). He is my second favorite drummer of all time.
RIP Ginger Baker 🙁

Thank You so much for posting that. Considering that it comes from one of the greatest drummers of all-time, I consider it the ultimate tribute.
Very ironic too, because Baker once said that if Cream was the Father of Heavy Metal, they should have aborted! I never considered Cream the Father of Heavy Metal. They were the Father of rock improvisation, yes, and they were a huge influence on ABB.

i hope a 4 cd boxset spanning his career can be released. he has way too many releases , a lot are out of print, and played on a ton of stuff.
I don't see any material not being ok'd at least by the artists themselves or the estates because of fear the ghost of ginger might haunt them.

Ginger Baker ranks up there with Elvin Jones and Tony Williams for me. RIP, GB

Totally agree, San Francisco bands too. Jamband genesis.

Saw him in 1969 on the Blind Faith tour at MSG. Of course a fight broke out on stage as the band completed their set. Don't know if Ginger would ever want to rest in peace. Goodbye to a true innovator.

If you are a fan of The Cream and Blind Faith, be sure to check out Ginger Baker's Air Force live on Beat Club:
I really enjoy this show a lot!
