I miss their old horn players Maurice Brown and Saunders Sermons.Anyone know why they left? I've heard both Derek and Susan throw a little shade at them in interviews. I don't follow social media much so I was curious if the details were out there somewhere.

I was also wondering if anyone had a ballpark figure of what a member of a band like TTB make per show? Do they get a cut of the merchandise or records sales or they just get paid to play music?

Thanks

Maurice Brown and Saunders Sermon didn't fit in, didn't want to stay, didn't submerge themselve to band leadership. End of story. I think Saunders Sermon was only touring temporary with them anyway.

But you can go read their booking stuff. I didn't dig for detail, gate % or anything else.

I sat up close for a couple of shows where it seemed Maurice apparently took, or extended, a solo to Derek's surprise or chagrin.
Ephraim and,Elizabeth just look happy to be there. And they play just fine.

Daddy Mack, out of curiosity what comments did they make in interviews? I've never seen them say anything negative about other players in interviews, so just curious

150K and up for a corporate booking.

Derek does mention, or maybe Kebbi mentioned that the now departed horn players didn't want to practice, which Kebbi found frustrating, and he loves it now because they do.

I know a guy, fantastic guitar player. Been on the road since he was 16 and he's 56 now. But he is stuck doing local gigs. Why? Personality conflict. He says the job should go to the best player and he's the best player, but you gotta get along with people the other 23 hours of the day.

So my guess is ... incompatible "lifestyles"

They would say things like we have some new members and are much better. Things of that nature.

I'm not a fan of Elizabeth lea. I seen some youtube vids where she sounded like she had headphones on a nd listening to another song.

I've seen her with TTB a bunch of times and she always sounds great. She fits in perfectly with what TTB is doing to my ears.

All true. I think it's a shame it didn't work out because Mo Brown was the best non-Derek soloist in the band by a long shot. He's fantastic. He played a Dreams with the ABB that made me cry. Like having 1964 Miles sitting in. He wasn't born to be a section player. I thought it would be pretty hip to just have a killer trumpet player dueling with Derek all the time.

Agreed, I was surprised Maurice Brown stayed with them as long as he did. He's a tremendous talent and his role in the band was relatively marginal.

I often find myself going back to watch that TTB AXS Red Rocks show from a few years ago (2012 I think) solely for Saunders and Mo and Kebbi together. Kebbi has one solo during Learn How To Love and it is just WOW to me, and they all do this cool little groove during the band intros. Saw him last month at the Ryman, his persona and music ability just makes him one of the coolest cats on the stage, seems to be a pretty laid back guy.
Saunders does a great version of When Doves Cry, check it out on YouTube, I can listen to it over and over. Would love to catch Mo or Saunders during one of their solo tours.

I don't know how much or how little Mo liked to practice - my sense is that he's a big deal in modern jazz and blues and soul-based rock may have seemed kind of simple to him - but what Al says here is right. He's an amazing soloist. The Dreams he mentions here was March 17, 2013, and it's that good. Another of my favorite TTB performances is Don't Drift Away from December 29, 2010, where he just soars away and then Derek flies after him. He's a fantastic player. And I like his first two solo albums. Since then he's been trying to do a meld of hip hop and jazz, which is an interesting idea but he's a better and more interesting trumpet player than he is a rapper, at least up to that point.

I'm not surprised a band of 12 people has lineup changes over a 6 year period, particularly one that brought together people from varied backgrounds including some who had lead their own bands previously.

Thanks for posting the date and the link. It was as good as I remembered. I think it's a shame that it couldn't work out.

I was lucky enough to be there for that one. Here's the TTB 2010 show I mentioned: https://archive.org/details/ttb2010-12-29.ca-14.winn.flac16

Sloth has it mostly right.......I was subscribed to Maurice's music newsletter for at least five years before he joined TTB. Compared to what he was doing on his own, he barely played with the TTB and I was always hoping the horns would be utilized more on a solo basis. It was always a natter of time that Maurice would go. Maurice has a new album of his own out called "The Mood" and it includes a blurb by Derek T - "Maurice has taken a solid foundation of jazz and blues and turned it into a modern sound that is uniquely his own."
— Derek Trucks. https://mauricemobettabrown.bandcamp.com/

Maurice was always my favorite of the TTB horn players. I was dissapointed when he left but not the least bit surprised.
Guys like that should be on their own.

listened to Dreams 3-17-13 again last night - great version all around.

Find me a place where Derek and/or Susan "throws shade" at ANY player that has been in either of their groups.

Maybe? Idk.......

Rolling Stone: It must be tough sometimes. You guys have a lot of people in your band, a lot of personalities.
Susan: ...Everyone gets along great and that is not normal. Usually you're dealing with egos and people who take things too seriously...

Rolling Stone: How did working with Tim Lefebvre change the album?
DT: Oteil Burbridge was in the band for the first few years and he's obviously a monster, amazing player, but there was always a bit of a disconnect with what the band naturally needed to be and where his head was.....

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/tedeschi-trucks-band-on-new-lp-it-never-felt-like-we-were-under-the-gun-20160201

Not necessarily "shade" here but I can see how some people took it as that. Doesn't seem like there was an issue, maybe just a difference in preference? I enjoy both Oteil and Tim, but they are apples to oranges. Tim seems more fundamental and traditional but man, Oteil, I have seen him do some things that just absolutely blow my mind, he can take it to space, especially when he is playing with Kofi.

Of course, IMHO.

This one as well. Of course Derek is careful but one could cal it shade I think.

It’s not by accident that we’re all like this. We wanted it to feel this way -we didn’t want to hire a bunch of sideman. I’ve always loved the stories of the early Allmans that floated around and how my Dad felt about that music -how it sounded like it was family. This is family. You want everyone to be invested and really believe in what we’re doing. It’s not just a gig. There have been times early on where we’ve said to people, if this is just a gig to you, well, there’s the door. There’s other shit you can do. That’s not what we’re doing here.

Can we agree that you're talking about some pretty light shade there? Lol

FWIW, i love Oteil. He is a monster player and a huge force for joy onstage. But i do think Tim Lefebvre is a better fit for TTB, in part because they are a groove groove groove band and he is a groover, but also because they are a very big band and he plays more sparingly. The TTB rhythm section is all about supporting and grooving, not being the lead instruments, since the band has so many musicians already.

all this talk about 'shade'. RiDiCULOUS IMO

Derek is a straight shooter. He won't tell you what to think. But he will lay it right out there, what he wants. And either you are, or you are not 'that'. Nothing wrong with it. He pays the bills.

I don't even know why 'shade' would be a topic of conversation given the outright vitriol that was thrown at the band, and especially at Susan on these forum boards especially when the band formed.

Neither Derek nor Susan nor any band member is losing sleep over this. They are touring and cashing checks.

I agree with everyone 100% that this is a pretty "shadeless" situation. I was simply trying to find some proof of what was mentioned above. I like how Derek runs things and he is 100% business while still being possibility the friendliest person on the planet. Humble as they come.

Hurt feelings happen when change happens. Inevitable.

To put 12 people and crew on the road and have most people happy most of the time is impressive.
Most of the time what happens is completely the opposite.

The 12 piece TTB really seem to be in sync with each other creatively and are enjoying what they are doing. Between every tour, what the heck.....even during every tour they take giant leaps forward with their music. Their songs grow, morph, transcend as soon as they take them on the road. Really seems like a group effort of kindred spirits. I loved their show last year but friday a week ago they seem to have time travelled to a whole other galaxy when i saw them in Amsterdam. Songs like "I Want More" just blow you away. It's like the studio version of "Whipping Post" compared to the LAFE version. So it looks like all the changes were for the better and indeed it hurts sometimes when it happens but everybody that left the TTB (or didn't join them when the DTB and STB were disbanded) has changed for the better and found great new other bands / projects.

I think maybe people are taking that phrase a little too seriously. They would never bash somebody a la ABB vs. Dickey but they did manage to make it clear they think the band is better now because some of the former horn players didn't like to practice much and that they think they're better with a more propulsive player like Tim than they were with Oteil. It has a positive spin about the band improving but there's a little bit of actual criticism there sometimes. Which doesn't mean these people hate each other - I'm sure they don't. Although I never got the sense Derek and Oteil's relationship in the ABB was the same after Oteil left the TTB, to be honest.

I just wanted to say thanks for posting this quote. It really seems to sum up something about Derek's approach to TTB....

"we didn’t want to hire a bunch of sideman. There’s other **** you can do. That’s not what we’re doing here."

It's not just about having the best musicians with the best chops. It's about getting that "sum is more than the parts" synergy between everyone involved. If everybody isn't "all in" then you just aren't going to get that X factor.

It says a lot about Derek and Susan that they set their heights that high. So far, the results seem to validate their approach.
