Peter Green...R.I.P.
monster player
According to what I read yesterday out of the UK, Peter died in his sleep at age 73.
Said Greeny quit Fleetwood Mac needing to get away due to drug, exhaustion and mental problems. During the time he was not active he lived with his brother and his wife in destitution. Gary Moore's Blues For Greeny allowed Peter to get all the publishing as Gary recorded all Peter Green compositions. But what about publishing for songs such as Black Magic Woman? Where was that money going?
Peter played a Harmony Meteor hollow body often early on but he came to play a unique Gibson Les Paul which had a pickup out of phase almost exclusively. Gary Moore adored the tone of this guitar and wanted it badly so Greeny said whatever you get for that SG you want to sell, I'll take for the Les Paul. Moore had to sell it when he hurt his hand and had to cancel a tour but was left owning a lot of money for the tour that was canceled. Kirk Hammett of Metallica owns Greeny today having paid 2 million for it.
When Peter returned to playing in the 1990's, he played a 1960 Fender Stratocaster and used the whammy bar some and a Gibson ES-165 using a Fender Blues Deville Amp and occasionally a Vox AC30.
In a UK guitar poll from 1995 he was voted number 3 all time right behind Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton.
It's a darn shame he had that long stretch of not being active. He was absolutely one of the all time greats!
Well that UK article gives the impression Peter Green had a 1960 Strat and a Gibson ES-175 (two guitars) during his latter years.
But I just finished watching an hour long video in two parts where Peter, not long ago, took someone with a camera to a storage shelter and Peter unlocks his cage and inside are dozens of guitar cases with a guitar inside each one. Electrics including some makes that are generally not that popular, a left handed Stratocaster, various acoustic guitars and resonator guitars.
Like all the great players, Peter Green had dozens of guitars and took careful care of them.
Once I watched a similar video with Jeff Beck. Think it was his attic. Dozens of guitars. Several Strats, Les Pauls, Teles, Gretch and other Gibsons and other makes.
Devon Allman was surprised Gregg had 42. Dickey has over 40 also and Duane Betts had three of the electrics and a couple of acoustics on the road with him before covid 19 shut down the Allman Betts Band.
great article, thanks for posting
