Pearl Jam Thoughts

I was really excited when I saw that Pearl Jam was going to play in Detroit during their fall tour. I took the day off from work and made the trek over to the east side of the state for this show. The show was both good and bad.
The good was the band sounded fantastic and played a great set. Loved that they opened up with Release. Black brought a tear to my eye and that has only happened one other time at a show (Furthur when they did China>Rider). They even paid tribute to Detroit by jamming on Wanna Be Your Dog, Stranglehold, Detroit Rock City and covered Kick Out The Jams.
The bad was Eddie Vedder talked way to much for my liking. Some of the rants had to be five minutes long and really ruined the momentum of the show. After one of them it took me a few songs to get back into the swing of the show. It was the opposite of the stage banter from the last show I saw where the only thing said from stage was "we'll be right back after a quick break" (STS9). Also part of the bad was the people around me. The guy behind me kept whistling and I swear that was doing more damage to my hearing than the band. The guy next to me was drunk and knocked me over in to the people sitting next to me So overall the band sounded good and it was a killer set list but Eddie seemed to have a case of LSD at times. .
I'd give the show a 3.5 out of 5 and I'd like to see them again but I don't think I would take a day off from work and drive across the state to do it.

I am flying in from NYC on Monday to see them in Milwaukee. Sounds like Eddie talking a lot has been par the course for the tour. Curious if you saw any of the shirts designed for Detroit sold during the show or were they sold out prior to the show to the people waiting on line for GA?

They had a Pearl Jam and Detroit Red Wings combination shirt. I got the t-shirt version but the ones that were hockey jerseys sold out quickly. I'll post a pic of it latter.

Opened with Release? Wow! That must've been killer. I've seen them about 6 times and I've always said they are the Zeppelin of my generation. Phenomenal live band. I'd be pissed too if Eddie talks too much. First, who gives a sh*t. Second, it kills momentum. I'm surprised he doesn't realize this.

Looks like a good overall set but thats one spicy 2nd encore.
The talking can be painful but maybe the boys need a break to keep up a pace of 32 songs.
The wine either sends him stumbling or rambling. Tough to pick whcih is worth.
Glad you got a RVM. Love that tune live and on record.
Was the crowd into the show? Lots of sin alongs? Love to see the shirt.
Just got my 2013 12 04 PJ bootleg in the mail yesterday. Was a great Birthday week.
Looking forward to their next western swing.

Crowd was into the show and on there feet from the beginning. Started singing along right from the start of Release. 2nd Encore was hot and the crowd went nuts when they did a little bit of Detroit Rock City into Spin the Black Circle. Was cool to see everyone moving and singing along to Alive with the house lights on.
I don't mind talking between songs to give them a break. Like when he talked about not liking Dennis Rodman when he was with the Pistons (Who besides Detroit fans liked that team anyways?) before going into Black, Red, Yellow was fine. On the other hand reading a sign then talking about maybe playing the song, then following up with we don't know the song. Following that up with asking someone else what they would like to hear isn't my thing. By the way if I was up front I probably would of said something like whatever you want but can you start playing it now but not in so nice of terms.

I was at the last show at the Spectrum in Philly on Halloween....'09 or '10, I cant remember. But over 40 songs and over 4 hours. It was unreal.

IP...I'm gonna end you a PM, was at the Trower show last night pretty solid also

I think the set looks great. Really reminds me of the great MSG show I attended in 2010. I attended the Barclays show where they performed Crown of Thorns which was a good show. Unfortunately it was marred by the sound as I was upstairs and the show was not enjoyable at all. To those who have not seen a show at the Barclays, it is absolutely hit and miss. I will not attend a show there unless I am in the front or have good loges.
I recently retired and figured why not visit cities based on music. I retired in September and so far have gone to DC to see Against Me and Gaslight Anthem (really to see friends), hit up the Riot Fest in Denver, the Replacements in Minneapolis, and Gonerfest in Memphis. I have PJ in Milwaukee next week, the Lynyrd Skynrd tribute at the Fox Theatre in November and Warren's Christmas Jam in Asheville in December. I plan to go out of town at least once a month to see something.
Actually the next two weeks is going to be nuts as I have Drive By Truckers tonight at the Beacon, the PJ show on Monday, Lee Bain and the Glory Fires (great southern rock band) next Thursday, Eddie and the Hot Rods at Bowery Electric, the Allmans on 10/27, Wilco at the Capitol, and Los Straitjackets and the Fleshtones on Halloween.
But I am really excited about PJ on Monday as I have a good seat and hope to purchase the tshirt designed for the event. The Brooklyn shirts sold out hours before the show.

Was also at the show last night. I didn't find Eddie's talking too bad, when i saw them in '03 it was much worse. But he did talk a bit. But still an amazing show.

Pearl Jam can Rock it with the best of them. That being said, Eddie Vedder takes himself way too seriously.
Memo to Eddie: no one cares. Quit trying to be Jim Morrison.

Saw them Tuesday in Memphis. I was hoping for one of two different tunes for the opening. Got neither of them. They were the first two played at the next show in Detroit. I've seen them 13 times now and have only gotten Release once. Oceans is the only one off the first album I've not had. I wish I had gotten a few of the tracks they played in Detroit, but it was still a fun show.

WTF does fraduate mean, I'm scratching my head over here trying to figure it out. If you mean graduated well just barely. Now college I kicked its ass.
On to the inbreeding accusation. That's a hell of an accusation based on a post written at 4 AM after an evening of 4 hours of driving and 3 hours of a concert. If it makes you feel superior then who cares it's the internet. Why should I take your advice if you can't spell graduate or from right?
All the grammar stuff is Sangs fault anyways he was supposed to upgrade Sang Spellchecker along time ago
