Anybody go to Peach Fest? That my first time and very impressed. That festival runs the way a festival should: great lineup and super friendly people in a very relaxed, scenic environment. With the demise of Wanee, this was the perfect substitute.
This was my first time seeing Southern Avenue. Very tight band. Lead singer is a fire cracker and the guitarist was impressive. I hope they come to my hometown sometime soon. Dopadod was also pretty good. They tuned their instruments differently and produced very interesting sounds. Videos don’t capture it. Those guys are great. I gave up most of String Cheese to see Big Something. Big Something never disappoints. I’m happy to see them moving up in the world of festivals. Stephen Marley was awesome. He’s always my favorite of the Marley kids. Lettuce is starting to grow on me. They have a very nice funk sound. Allman/Betts sounded great. Duane Betts crushed that Blue Sky solo. And whoever the other guy is on lead guitar is spectacular as well. Very cool set. Was nice to hear those songs again. Definitely could have done without Devon Allman throwing up the white power sign as he was walking off stage. After all his dad and uncle had done to break those barriers down; it was a disappointing sight. And if it was unintentional, I suggest finding a different hand gesture to say goodbye.
The most impressive all weekend was Marcus King. What an immense talent. Most exciting guitarist I’ve seen a long while. Bummed I missed Taz. I really liked Warren with Phil & Friends. He brought an edgy sound to those Dead songs. The gal on keyboard was tremendous and a great addition to the band. Can’t wait for next year. RIP Wanee.

I can't imagine that's what he intended. I actually had to look up what the symbol was so maybe he doesn't know either.

An “ok” sign? Maybe he was just still holding a pick in his hand?

I can’t imagine he was throwing up some white power gesture.

Wasn’t his pick hand, and the “ok” sign would have been plausible had he not felt the need to accentuate the gesture by turning his hand backwards after throwing it up facing forward. The purple rain video is on YouTube.

just watched it (on mute as I am at work). Its clear to me that he is holding up 3 fingers and moving his hand around so everyone in the band can see. they then play 3 beats to end the song.

fingers go up around 8:54 mark, song ends at 9:00

+1. I LOL'd at this part too. You're reading into this WAYYYY too much, man.

Also, I'm almost postitive Rob Compa tunes his guitars in standard tuning. Might have a random song or something in an open tuning, but that guy's a monster guitarist....he's not venturing too far from standard if at all.

Thanks for posting the video so we can judge for ourselves.

Looks like WP to me; he uses one (index) finger to conduct, turns showing the WP sign to the audience, and then facing band uses body language for final 3 beats (like they didn't know).

Pretty sure any southerner under 50 knows what the WP sign is, although it started as a hoax for white supremicists to use to troll before maybe becoming their legit sign. Even the Anti-Defamation League suggests not condemning people who use it because there are so many confusing uses now. He does need a better sign off if he doesn't want this to become an issue.

We think that this is the kinda stuff he's thinking about on stage as he's leading a band through changes in the heat of that moment? I watched the video too out of sheer curiousity. The fact we're actually dissecting this and making it an issue is kinda ridiculous. Can Devon be kinda dramatic? Yes. But there's a zero percent that what we're talking about is what is happening, do your thing, Devon.

Optics. People (& law enforcement) DO parse video for such things - like the Coast Guard officer who got fired for silently making the signal while his CO was being interviewed for TV - and who does what in crowd scenes. Ending a song/exiting a stage as he's done hundreds of times before doesn't require much concentration & it's hardly "the heat of that moment." I don't know him, but he can probably hold 2 thoughts in his head simultaneously.

I'm just saying if he wants to avoid confusion, get a new sign off.

My point is this, if you've ever been a musician and stood on stage and performed (if you haven't, you aren't going to understand the point, which is fine), nobody is thinking about this. It's an acute focus on what you're doing that takes over ALL focus. What you're seeing on this video is a spur of the moment reactionary motion to queue his band. Nobody is thinking about "how many fingers am I holding up" or "how is my hand clinched' when they're focused on music. You're free to think whatever you'd like, but this is becoming comical.

So the theory is that Devon Allman, a guy who has shared the stage with Jaimoe, Lamar Williams jr, Oteil, Marc Quinoes, Robert Randolph, etc., decided to throw up a (somewhat obscure 2 year-old) White Power sign during a diverse music festival at the end of a...[checks notes]...uh, a Prince song? And assuming for a moment that is the intent, we also think his band mates were ok with this? I watched it and it is a deliberate gesture, but I just think the intent is likely something else.

Bummer this became the focus of the thread, so I'll say glad you had a great time at Peach. I really miss Wanee and hope to make it to a Peach Fest one of these Summers.

15 years of performing didn't require ANY focus on ending & getting off stage for me; it was rote. I was usually thinking about who would be backstage & what was going on after. Cues were telepathic after a while, but every musician is different.

Thresher saw something & thought it was worthy of a comment & others responded. I don't think discussion is comical because we're living in Orwellian times; law enforcement, 24/7 media, & anyone w/a twitter or IG account can misinterpret actions, post them, & soon there's a viral story that may or may not be accurate. Goes w/the territory of being in the spotlight & pretty sure Devon knows that.

Glad PeachFest was enjoyable.

This is laughable. I guess you didn't notice Devon's friend and guitar tech Aldy is a black man. He is on stage many times in a set to swap out guitars.

Edited to add it's the sign he gives the band that the song will end on a three count.
