Oteil Burbridge: "No One Seems To Know Why The Dead Is Stopping"

If you read this, Bob Weir strongly hints that they will continue in some shape or form.

It's as confusing as when Oteil left the TTB for more family time but jumped into the Dead pretty darned quickly!

I'm sure he gets paid more by Dead and Co. I heard him talk about the creature comforts being unreal. Also, TTB probably was doing 200+ shows per year (certainly > 150) and Dead and co probably does < 50.

I've been checking the free previews on a bunch of the live streams for this tour. The crowds they are drawing are unreal. Packed baseball parks all across the country. Based on ticket prices that's some major league money indeed.

Excellent question. And one that no one seems to have an answer for.
I mean, they're old. Could be they just forgot why.

I can think of a few.

They are old and confused. Phil, Mickey and Bill told John Mayer and Otiel they can't remember why they decided to stop touring.
Mayer and Otiel are very disappointed. Mayer said it was by far the most money he and Otiel had ever made on the road and they sell out all across the country.
They can't remember. Phil thought they would stop in 2025, Mickey thought it was this year and Bill thought it was last year until their manager Emailed him the itinerary for this year.

According to Celebrity Net Worth John Mayer is worth $75 million. Otiel is worth $4 million.
Looks as if they will be able to continue to be housed and afford their meals if they do loose their jobs.
I knew a guitarist/song writer and a drummer in my area in the 1970's who were temporarily homeless when their girlfriends got fed up with them not having a straight gig to help pay the bills.

Remember Bobby was actually fired from the Grateful Dead but nobody got around to actually telling him so he just stayed around and on things went.
Oteil and John should just act as though it'll continue and start planning dates for next year.
I'm sure Bobby will go along with it....

Set list from Dead and Companies final show.
Phil and Mickey were the only Grateful Dead members to play. Bill must have retired last year.
Wonder where Otiel will land next?

Didn't you mean Bob and Mickey? To my knowledge Phil Lesh was nowhere to be seen.

Otiel really thumping with the Dead!! Look at the size of the crowd! No wonder this was a good money gig for him.

Posted by: @robertdee@tbomike Bobby can't get them to turn on the darn microphone!!! John Mayer sounds great!! Love the tone on his Paul Reed Smith!!

I am aware already that they are all good musicians. Doesn't change how I feel.

@tbomike I understand. Mayer and Otiel hooked up with a band that was getting close to their expiration date. I understand why they are disappointed to see it end. Big crowds means big paychecks unless they get a set salary rather than a cut of the nightly take. I read the last Dead show in San Francisco the other night took in $31 million dollars for the local economy. SF needed that. The downtown area is dying because of hundreds of people living on the streets, taking drugs and relieving themselves on the streets and it stinks to high heaven plus they hassle visitors for spare change according to a friend who just spent four days there to see the show.
CVS, Target, Walgreens, Walmart and others have abandoned SF because local leaders apparently are more sympathetic toward their street people than businesses being vandalized. SF police are not allowed to respond to shoplifting less than $100 so apparently street people would walk into a Walgreens and gather less than $100 dollars of merchandise knowing the police won't come, curse out anyone in their way and leave. It's not the SF of the 1960's.
Funny also in the last five years of the Allman Brothers the newer guys joined Gregg Allman in wanting to wrap it up. It was an original member who wanted to keep going.

Dead and Company may not be over according to John Mayer who is incredibly grateful for being in the band. Mayer said it changed his life, made him a better person, a better musician and painted memories for him which is the high point of his entire life.
Bill did think last year was the last year for the band and declined to play this year so had to be replaced on the other set of drums.

Oteil for Mule bass...

@mulemewarren The manager of Dead and Company said they stopped touring because one of the original GD members had to drop out for health reasons and the remaining two are just too old now to do 30 city tours with the traveling and hotels etc. Not good for their health. It was the managers advice to the three Grateful Dead members.
Otiel would be a good fit for the Mule but wouldn't it be a step down for Otiel especially when it comes to the paycheck? Probably.
But where could he go next? Too young to retire.
