New TTB song

The Tedeschi Band sounds so boring and uninspired with this tune. Sounds like 80% of their catalog.

I thought this song was kind of boring myself.

The Tedeschi Band
I am sure this is a typo/Freudian slip, but it made me laugh anyway!

My geeky analysis: Good throwback sound and catchy chorus.....but the song needed a bridge of some type after the second chorus to give it some contrasting depth. They've written some with Gary Louris, who is the master of these sections (inserted typically after the second chorus that introduces either a solo or a return to the chorus). I would have also give Derek a little a true solo instead of playing fills over the singers. Wouldn't call it boring though...

It sounds as exciting me as "Hard Case", which is more repetitive.

I didn't know they had written with Louris? I guess when you think about it, its not that strange but wonder how they got together? Thanks for information.

Idle Wind (Louris, Trucks, Tedeschi) and Whiskey Legs (Trucks, Louris, Tedeschi) are co-written with Gary from Made Up Mind They tend to list the writer first who had the original idea so that may be true of Idle Wind, which is good on the studio record and an even better live song.

From an interview with Premier Guitar in 2013:
You used several writing partners on this record. What were the sessions with Eric Krasno like? You both have been running in the same circles for a while.
Trucks: I’ve known Krasno since I was maybe 13 or 14 years old and Susan’s known him a long time. And like you said, there’s a lot of shared experiences in the same circles. We had Oteil, Kofi, Eric, and Adam Deitch down to the house about three years ago, and we wrote for a couple of days and ended up with close to 30 song ideas. It was an amazing little run of creativity. Eric, in a lot of ways, is an honorary band member. He was on the first record, so it was pretty natural to call him. If he’s working on a song and hears Susan’s voice in it, he’ll call and send a little idea along. Then he’ll come down and we’ll finish off the tune.
A lot of people we write with are that way. I have a connection with Doyle, and I’ve been playing with Oliver Wood since my teens. Susan has known [John] Leventhal for a long time, and Gary Louris too.
Tedeschi: We have a lot of very deeply rooted relationships with these writers. They’re all people we either look up to or are just really dear friends. And at the end of the day, they are all super-talented.
What’s a typical writing session like?
Trucks: It’s different with each person. Krasno has a studio and he’s always demoing things, so he’ll show up with something. Gary Louris shows up with nothing, so you sit down with three folding chairs and a few guitars, and a few hours later you have a song. He’s one of those guys where you sit down and see how the day is feeling and just pull something out of the air. Oliver Wood will usually have one lyric or one riff and you just go from there. Leventhal can work both ways. With Doyle, he shows up and we immediately go into “build a tune” mode. I’ll play bass and he’ll play guitar, and then he’ll hop on the drums—ideas just flying all over the studio.

It's OK
Hopefully live there will be more to it

From the Austin Chronicle, JAN. 17, 2012:
G: Some of the songs you wrote for Revelation were with Gary Louris of the Jayhawks and Rosanne Cash’s husband John Leventhal. They also had co-writes on your last solo album. Are the newer songs leftovers or were they written for this project?
ST: What happened was that I had such a good experience writing with them, and I had never really written with anyone before other than people in my own band, that when we were writing for this record, I told Derek about them. We invited Gary down to see if anything would happen and they immediately fell in love. There was immediate chemistry. I should have known because they’re both really professional. They don’t hack their way through something. John Leventhal is such a great guitarist and producer. He can’t help but produce a song while he’s writing it and he’s so sweet and down to earth. I knew that Derek would want to work with people like that and it worked out great.

The CD "Signs" is up for listen.
[Edited on 2/7/2019 by plqmule]

Great information about working with Louris. I know he's written with a lot of people. I listened to a Dixie Chicks CD last night where he'd co-written a few songs.

I'm digging the new album, I love this band. Let Me Get By was their best studio album so far, lots of great material, really stoked for where they continue to go. "Signs" sounds like it could have been a Sly tune. Digging what I'm hearing so far...

Sadly, I meant that. Derek's creativity was clipped the second his no-talent wife and him started SSR.

yawn..............................
not a big TTB fan anyway

This is the funniest sh*t I've read on this site in years.

Anyone who has been on this site for a while knows I am no fan of the TTB. But even I do not agree with your opinion. Derek and Susan went into this together, and I think they are both happier than when they toured in their individual bands. They certainly are more successful commercially.
Unfortunately, Derek did not consult me before choosing this path. But it's only unfortunate for me, not for him.

This is not only not funny, it's an ignorant statement. Why people need to make themselves feel better by posting this garbage is beyond me.

I'm a huge Derek fan and a Susan fan and for some A**hole to say Susan has no talent is an insult to any person on this site as far as I'm concerned..... it's a very ignorant statement by a very ignorant individual.

Exactly.

Exactly and agreed. I think Susan is by far the weakest link in this band and is holding everyone else back....I still don't really understand why the full horn section is there, so underutilized.....

This is bananas. If you don't like Susan's voice or guitar, fine, but she's supremely talented. There are a lot of singers that I don't like, but still respect their talent. Anyone who has been to a TTB show knows the horn section rocks it every night, I'm not sure what more you want from them. It's bizarre the amount of love this band gets every where but here, but it's easy to read between the lines regarding those few here who aren't into them and repeatedly feel the need to make it known.

I see The TTB every year as they have set up a residency at The Chicago Theatre every winter. Just saw them last month and it was the best show of theirs I have seen. Not sure if it was where my seat was the sound was so much better than the last few times I saw them. Derek was much more pronounced in the sound while Susan's vocals weren't.
Personally I liked them both better in their separate bands with the sit in here and there but this is how it is now.
And for those who don't care so much for them, here's something to think about. They sold out four nights at The Chicago Theatre last month. The ABB played there four different years. They never even played four nights any of the years.
Everything in Moderation. Including Moderation.

41 posts and a rotten attitude azz hat, probably a favorite poster we all know, yet under another handle. Regardless, likely someone who is a non musician or vocalist "expert". BigV should pipe in as nauseum soon. The choir, ya know. If y'all don't like Susan, I get it. But to say no talent is ignorant. "Not my preference" is more correct.
The comical part is I bet most Susan antagonists would phoney chummy up to Derek in person, despite the fact they insult his WIFE. Smack down sh!t is some locales.

I had not heard of Susan until I saw her open for the Allman Brothers in 1999. She rocked. Had a voice I thought was similar to Janice Joplin. She fronted a tight little band and played a blue Telecaster that a lot of people had signed.
Derek had just joined the ABB and we had been hearing rumors that Gregg and Butch were thinking about leaving the band over Dickey running off Jack Pearson. Later heard Dickey wasn't mean at Jack, it was Jack needed Dickey to turn down and Dickey refused so Jack, who had a hearing condition, quit after the 1999 Beacon run.
But the ABB show was excellent. Dickey, Butch and Gregg were all smiles and all three men often would look at Derek and smile. Dickey played an old road worn Stratocaster and Derek a nice looking SG and both guitarists were bringing it big time. I got a tingle down my spine. It was so close to the original band. Hard to believe just one year later Dickey was not playing well often and the band was ready to break up.
Susan came out and Dickey called her his little blue girl. Blue Tele I suppose.
Susan and Derek developed a thing for each other and decided to get married and for the sake of their marriage they chose to work together. I know for a fact Derek wanted out of the ABB long before 2014. And by 2009 Gregg and Warren were ready to move on. But Butch wanted to go 5 more years and many people were counting on the band to tour for their jobs. Derek's marriage and family and their desire to work together came first and that is understandable to me. Just think how many times Gregg's marriages failed. And Dickey is not far behind. But its sweet that Dickey and Donna have lasted so long.
I'm not a huge TTB fan either but I enjoy much of their shows and Susan is okay with me. I saw her play a great blues solo that made Derek smile and nod a few years ago on that Strat Derek gave her.

I enjoy the TTB. Derek & Susan have really developed a following & I think it's great that this type of band has really become a big draw. They are helping to keep the music I love alive against a lot of strong odds.
If there was one thing I'd like to see improve, at least to my amateur ears, it would be the songwriting.
I think some really kick ass songs might put them over the top and convince radio that there is a huge market for Roots Rock. It might also open the path for many other artists and create an economic landscape that benefits more & more bands that play the music that I love.
Most of the people that were just nominated for Grammy's are people I wouldn't walk across the street to see.

It's such a pity you guys cannot respond to DJTrader without resorting to calling him (or her) an asshole or ignorant. If you don't agree with him, you can respond to his opinion, rather than making it a personal attack.

Exactly.
Unfortunately that just seems to be the way it has always been around here. Any dissenting opinion whether stated once or repeated, seems to warrant the wrath of a keyboard warrior who rather than letting it slide makes the choice to attack someone who has spoken out against a "Hero"...too bad, but, that is the way it is now.
"Say something 'bad' about a person I worship and I will take it very personally"

Aside from one comment (which I agree was unnecessary), the vast majority of the dialogue on this thread has been pretty respectful, especially considering how inflammatory DJTrader's comment was obviously intended to be. While people are free to have and express a negative opinion regarding a musician, they can expect others to respectfully disagree and not take it personally. It feels like some commenters' eyes light up when they see a thread about a musician they dislike and then play victim when fans don't want to hear the same old negativity regarding something they very much enjoy. Absolutely have an opinion, which many here politely and respectfully voiced, but if it's not your jam why feel the need to remind everyone and trash musicians others take joy in?

Agreed, that is always the hope.

Because there are always new ideas and views, new songs to discuss, new band members, new participants in the discussion. You can always not take it personally and just go about your day.
