i love the 'bag of tricks' quote, on how to make people happy and how they strive not to do that. i have two real life examples of that happening to me with the dTb.

before a show once that i helped produce with them, kofi was working on the set list. i tried to hint as much as possible that i'd love to hear joyful noise in the set. they didn't play it. i blame me.

another time, i talked with derek before a show and told him how much i was hoping for a particular lick that he did to close a song. he did not play it. and i haven't heard him play it since. that was 2006.

if i like something about derek and his music, i now make it a point to keep it to myself and never tell him.

I think that says it all about Derek's approach

Derek definitely has a contrarian streak. People have been "expecting" him to do certain things since he was a boy prodigy, and he fights fiercely against it.

That is why I could only chuckle at the people who were clamoring for him to ditch Susan and bring back the DTB.

"Now they have really done it," I thought. "Even if he was thinking about getting DTB back together, he sure as hell won't do it now."
