Here’s one probably a bit different: Robert Randolph.

His playing is awesome and I wanted to like his stuff. But man, his albums bore me. Songs aren’t that good, and it’s just a chore to get through.

Goes to show you, all the chops in the world can’t save a bad song.

Its interesting to read how many takes on the TTB.

I really tried to like them, but just cant seem to get into it. I had they're latest in my car for about week, almost trying to force myself to listen and get it. More so hit or miss. I could probably make a nice cd mix from all of they're releases. I wish it was not that way, cause I just love Derek's tone. I would almost like to see them reduce that band down to just core members, singer, guitar, bass drums, keyboard. Keep it more raw. I do miss DTB.....maybe someday.

Never tried liking Springsteen...never will. Van Morrison falls into the same category. Buddy Guy is hard for me to listen to....hit or miss. I do like his Sweet Tea release though.

Modern country music over the last 25-30yrs....no way. That's a whole separate thread.

Never got....
Pearl Jam
SRV
DMB
Grateful Dead
Phish-very quirky
Probably any "Jam Band"

To the original poster, there is a ton of negativity on the Hoffman forums inside of almost every thread. However, they don't like starting a thread that is a negative. I think that's what got you.

For my list, usually it is one thing that keeps me from being a fan...

Almost any prog or jam band. I want to like Phish because I think Trey is quite good, but you need some structure and they have several long jams that just peter out without any finish. For most other prog or jam bands, you need the song first, then the jam. I feel like many of them are missing the songs.

(I do like Widespread Panic, but I get when someone says they don't like John Bell's voice.)

Instrumental guitar shredders like Yngwie

Those early 00's Clive Davis directed Santana with "special guests" albums.

Post Peter Green Fleetwood Mac

Marcus King because of his voice

Blackberry Smoke because of their lyrics

James Taylor

I tried to like Zappa, and there are plenty of things I do like, but they are all mixed in with plenty that are just too out there for me.

Motley Crue could put out the greatest album ever, but will never listen to it. Any band who does a box set titled "Music To Crash Your Car To" after their singer had a car crash killing his friend doesn't deserve the time of day.

I'm with you here - incredibly talented but he overplays for my taste. Much prefer Roosevelt Collier.

It is a pretty strict forum over there. There was this creepy inner circle of thread police. I hung out on there a few weeks last summer, was relieved to get back over here to the land of the free.

One thing for sure, say one bad thing about the Doors, poof, thread disappears. I think Hoffman must have worked with the Doors.

I've been on there for years. yes steve did some mixing for the doors. he was in a doors thread recently discussing it. however all signs point to another reason those threads get closed and it has to do with another member of the forum

That is interesting. Would like to know whats behind this Doors thread censoring. ok, will delete my f u thing - stil the fact that I could post that shows Rowland is a thousand times cooler than SH.

steve even made a comment he'd love to work with them again but his mastering doesn't seem to fit with the current managements plan.

we think another forum member gets upset with people critiquing the bands releases and just goes reporting a bunch of posts until the admins have no choice but to close the thread . if you make a negative complaint about doors products the member gets upset

Wow. I mean wow. Most of the folks on this list are my go-to favorites! Dead, Waits, Springsteen, Who, Zappa, Talking Heads, Janis, etc. They are all in my current rotation. Surprised, but I can understand, though. Along with classic rock and blues, I listen to rap, punk, bluegrass, etc. Tried opera but wasn't really doing it for me. Love old country (Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, etc.) but tried new country and couldn't do it, although I have mad respect for the guitar work of Brad Paisley, Vince Gill, Keith Urban and a few others.

I'm not a Fleetwood Mac fan and I agree with The Dude when I say "I hate the #$%$ Eagles, man". Though I am a deadhead, I wasn't thrilled with Phish, Panic, Traveler, etc. Lastly, tried but never got into the hair metal bands.
All that being said, if I like a song, I like it. Sometimes I like songs by bands that I never got into.

I saw many bands / artists listed that i kinda like or really dig a lot.

Music i tried but still don't like / have limited appreciation for:

Grateful Dead
Phish
Def Leppard
Cheap Trick
Phil Collins
Metallica (> 1990)
U2 (> 1988)

Like(d) hardrock and heavy metal but ignored all those Eighties hairbands like Poison, Crue, Ratt, etc.)
I'm old school metal fan and never warmed up to all that Nu-metal.

In the past i gave these two a chance by buying their most famous album but never "got it":
Jeff Buckley
Marvin Gaye
(maybe the "time wasn't right")

What also just came to mind and falls into the "Blasphemy" category: Elvis Presley. I really like the music from the Fifties. Rockabilly, Rock & Roll, Country. But i like all other big names from that era much more than Elvis (especially Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash).

This is an interesting thread.

I totally agree with some comments, disagree with others. Springsteen is my all time favorite artist / musician / entertainer. There have been many posts about him on this site over the years saying they don't like him. Just an assumption but I wonder if people got hit over the head with him ever since the 80s. Just a thought.

I dated a girl years ago who was into Depeche Mode BIGTIME so I took her to a concert, It was one of the weirdest concert experiences of my life. I tried for a year, didn't get it. I can still listen to a song by them, just not my cup of tea.

Some might remember the G-3 tours of the late nineties featuring three guitarists. I went to all of them. Kenny Wayne Shepard and Jonny Lang were usually on them. I like them but I cannot stand Steve Vai who was on the tours. His screeching, thrash, whatever it is guitar just totally turns me off.

Tragically Hip. My wife dragged me to a show and I thought it was horrible. But I did try.

Radiohead. Saw them years ago when taken to a show by my friend. This was before they were so huge. Don't like them at all and don't understand the hub a bub.

Pearl Jam. See the post above.

And I agree one million percent with War Eagle's post on Widespread Panic. I could listen to an entire show of no lyrics.

Guessing Eric Johnson, Y. Malmsteen & Jeff Beck might just be on your list too 😮 Grin 😉 -
how about those G3 summit players like John McLaughlin, Al DiMeola & Paco DeLucia too - cut from the same cloth - saw the latter 3’s G3 show back in the day (90s), they have a Live in SF recording out there too

Was super stoked about the Stills-Young studio release in 1976, but try as I might to like it......OK, not much else - the Crosby-Nash record from around then (Wind on the Water) was a much stronger release - surprisingly

TTB - To me it seems like they try to hard to be like Delaney & Bonnie or Derek & the Domino's...

I would rather just hear the originals do that music.

The fervent disdain for TTB on this site continues to fascinate me. I'll see them a couple times a year if I can swing it.

Cool thread topic --- my list

Early Genesis / Gabriel - Too much genius for me I guess
Experimental era Miles Davis ( not including Bitches Brew which I dig ) --- life's too short to endure so much pain
Mahavishnu Orchestra - Unbelievably complex and intense, unbelievably soul-less
Rush --- I don't think I'm smart enough to appreciate them apparently
Umphrey's McGee - see Mahavishnu comments
King Crimson - still trying but feels a lot like early Genesis
The Band - never got the hype
Bela Fleck - gets old quick
Booker T & the MGs - after one or 2 hits, I lost interest quick
Pat Metheny - time for a nap

Marcus King-I’d like him in the local bar but as a big time player...eh.

Oh, this is a good one! Great example. I can't take the voice but he is a talented player I'd probably enjoy in another band.

True, I can't stand his voice or JB of WSP. They all make Bob Dylan in 2020 sound like a good singer. But Marcus King's playing isn't bad but I would not pay a lot to see him, but overall his playing is boring and he tends to copy whoever he is touring with at the time.

Ryan Adams. My friends who I went to lots of Allmans, dead, and phish shows with love his music, and we would listen to his CDs on the rides home from shows, bars, or parties and it was not bad but I never liked it enough to buy or listen to any of his music.

Nick Cave-boring.

moe.-saw them open up for the Allmans in Philadelphia in 2005, and they were very, very, boring. No improvisation and it was like listening to them on CD. We skipped them and just stayed in the lot drinking beer at the Scranton PA show.

Mars Volta-Again my friends loved them and would put on their CDs or albums but the music did nothing for me.

WSP-The playing isn't bad but I can't stand JB's voice at all.

Marcus King-See above for WSP.

Warren Haynes solo/modern day gov't mule the past decade or so-I bought Dose and saw early mule before Allen Woody overdosed on heroin, and went to more shows on other tours but the new songs suck, the covers which were always part of mule shows are now a parody of themselves and Warren's histrionics, and I have seen Warren and/or guests completely ruin and bring down the overall flow of songs or setlist/vibe/energy of shows with covers or badly placed songs. The overall band does not play nearly as well as they once did and my friends and I are done with them.

TTB-They are not bad but I have no desire to see them live again. Susan sings and plays way too much, and they are basically completely copying the early late 1960s and early 1970s roots rock bands, shows are very boring, and pretty much all the same.

Top of the list, easily, Grateful Dead.

A few other bands/musicians/genres but it's quite a list and nobody gives a sh!t anyway.

It's interesting since their facebook fan page is one of the most diehard fan pages, and crowds at their shows have been pretty intense.

the covers which were always part of mule shows are now a parody of themselves and Warren's histrionics

At a recent Wanee, Warren performed an intense, almost darkly serious, dub version of Steve Miller's "The Joker". It was awful.

This is a fun thread. I can't listen to much Jeff Beck after Blow by Blow and Wired, which costs me guitar guy cred, but whatever. I'm basically blues and jazz based in my taste. Prog rock is a pretty much total no go for me, with a few notable exceptions and I can't listen to Rush at all. Any combination of opera and rock should never have happened. I saw Dream Theater at Roseland once and was so digging the first 5 minutes, then the singer came in. Yikes. Yngwie is terrific for 2 songs.

I get the thing about SRV being to many notes, and I originally felt the same way, but saw a life-changing show at 1990 JazzFest that made me reevaluate everything and having gotten super deep into him over the past few years for obvious reasons... there's a lot of material that transcends that. and he was a great, underrated singer IMHO.

Porkchop - the reason "Rockin Horse" was left of the album is Warren wrote it for Gregg, who read the lyrics and said, "I ain't singing this." I think in context, those lyrics are actually pretty good.

Oh, you heard blackey's story about that too? I kid 😉

Different strokes, I know a lot of people love that song. To me the lyrics aren't as poetic or original as the other 12 songs on the topic from Where It All Begins
