Here is a relentless performance of Sco-Mule. One of the best Mule performances I have ever heard:

Pretty cool . Thanks. Dannys keyboards at times are well, a little goes along way, just my opinion ,but overall a good jam.

I always agreed with your take on Danny - especially in his first 6-7 years with the Mule - which this particular Sco-Mule version falls within. I appreciated that he was Warren's guy and he helped one of my all-time favorite bands continue on when it looked like they might not, but I always found his playing a little lacking to outright distracting, to occasionally grating at times.

However, I think he's gradually worked to improve himself as a soloist to the point that I find him to be one of the more improved players in the jamrock/jamband scene. Over the last 3-4 years to my ears he become a very solid soloist. He was always solid as an accompanist I thought - but his solo chops are significantly better now than when he first joined the band. It's particularly evident in the shows Gov't Mule did in Jan/Feb 2015 with John Scofield where they were playing sets of mostly extended jazz instrumentals with long solo sections from Warren, Danny, and Sco. Danny holds his own pretty well with someone like Scofield in that setting, and that's far from an easy task. Now don't get me wrong - Warren and especially Sco are the stars of that setting and why I listen back to those shows so frequenty - but if you can hang with those guys without being a detriment to the whole thing - that's something. Anyway, rambling - just wanted to note a 2015 or 16 version of Sco-Mule might give a different impression of Danny's playing.

A contribution to the point of this thread now from me - and something that falls a little outside my usual personal taste. I'm an ABB fan for the jazzy instrumentals and extended solos. Never been a big fan of the country side of the band, and would always rather a 15 minute song with no lyrics than a 5 minute one with words. However, I present for this thread's consideration a bit of blend of all of the above - Erik Deutsch and the Jazz Outlaws.

Erik Deutsch is a funk/jazz/ keyboard player who I first saw touring with Charlie Hunter. He leads this group which is a collective of sorts of mostly NYC based jazz and jamrock players who play mostly original tunes that are their take on a hybrid of Outlaw Country with jazz influences. John Scofield Uberjam Band members Tony Mason (drums) and Avi Bortnick (guitar) are frequent members - as is Joe Russo's Almost Dead guitarist Scott Metzger. Sometimes there's horns - sometimes not depending on who's around. A single song and then a 50ish minute set showcasing two different lineups of the group:

Edited to add one jazzier song too in the second link.
