I have been wanting to start a thread like this for quite awhile and I
figured the beginning of a new year would be a good time.

I would like, and hopefully others will too, is to share some music that
might fall into the categories of flying under the radar, looked over,
deep tracks, lost albums, obscure, local and regional artists, a one off group,
album, song that deserves a listen ,a musician that is special to you that you feel needs
to be shared or others might enjoy and etc... I think you get my drfit where I am going with this.

This can be open to any genre of music. I am always on the lookout for something I have not heard before and have willing ears for suggestions. I like to discover, and hopefully this thread will do this for all and generate conversations.

Feel free to share!! I am going to try at least once a week to post something on here.

This was released in 1992 by Charlie Rich. " Pictures and Paintings". A friend of mine turned me on to this. I was hesitant at first not being a country fan, but this is definetly not that genre, another side of him which I really like.

Charlie Rich - Pictures And Paintings (1992)

Feel like going home

Nice, nice, nice!! Mike Bloomfield was a huge fan of Charlie Rich. Made me stand up and take notice. Thanks for the recommendation.

That Charlie Rich stuff is really nice, never heard that side of him.

Two band I've been spinning lately:

The Olympians just released their debut, which is 1960s-style swinging horns. They are on Daptone Records, which shouldn't be a surprise since that's kind of Daptone's thing (Charles Bradley, Sharon Jones, etc). I'm loving it: https://theolympians.bandcamp.com/

They are kind of a regional act that I first caught at Wanee a few years back, but Dangermuffin is in constant rotation lately. One of my favorite singers around today:

Don Preston was Leon Russell's guitar player in the 70's.

I owned his solo album-some may recognize his playing/singing from Bangladesh concert:

Before he became Marky Ramone, and after Dust broke up, Marc Bell played drums for Estus. I saw them open a show at the Academy Of Music, and went out and got the album. The only fault with the record is that it is slightly over produced, too many strings.

One of my favorite Faces songs. Great playing from Ronnie and I love Kenny's drumming on this track.

The Faces-Borstal Boys-Live in Voorburg 1973

Hard to nail down the genre as the album is a bit all over the map intentionally. I will go with old school progressive rock. The guitarist for his band is real nice guy and as good looking as they get. 😉 One of three acts that I play/perform with.

Jasen Colson Band - Highlights of Zaphod show

Very cool, thanks for sharing. I liked the little reggae breakdown at the end of the song. The drummer/vocalists sounded a little like Paul Carrack.

Thanks. Just a little breakdown with a bit of each tune. Paul Carrack? Interesting. I hear a lot of names thrown out. He is a real talented guy. We are releasing a new single on March 1st. We are actually having vinyl 45s made up.

We thought it would be fun to have a 45 available. Plus I get to frame one for the wall which is fun. I have stuff that I have played on with pretty much most other formats so a 45 is cool.

Fun to play on CDs now with no labels, A&R or interference also. If we want to play an eight minute long song with 4 different sections and time signatures then we do. 😛

I have know Jasen since he was a teen and we was talented then. I always tried to convince him to make a solo album aside from his various bands over the years. When he finally did and pegged me to come out of "retirement" and record and play with him. It was hard to say no. His songs are all over the map which makes it interesting and gets me out of my wheelhouse at times which is also cool.

I have never been at the level to play for a label and probably never will, but to have that independence to do whatever you want I am sure is a blessing to let the creative juices flow.

I like when a musician or band is of all over the map stylistically ,but they can still maintain they're "sound".

I read a review awhile back when Doyle Bramhall II released Jellycream(one of my favorite releases) and this particular person was kinda digging at Doyle for being all over the place with his music and should settle on one direction. Granted opinions are like you know what's and everyone has got one,;) , but I thought...why? Why does it matter if it is? Rubbed me the wrong way. Like I said ,just ones opinion.

Not to be nosey, but is it expensive to get vinyl pressed these days? I know to buy newly released record albums in the store it can be 20.00 and up to 30.00 or more. The reason why I ask , I have a collection of acoustic tunes I have been working on for years(thats an understatement) and I thought about putting something out one of these days in the future.

I don't have the dollar and cents in front of me as Jasen is dealing with the 45. I'm just the hired help who shows up at the studio or stage. LOL

Vinyl is definitely a higher cost than CDs. For what you are looking at doing, I say CD. Really not as expensive as some may think also. Especially if you can record at home or at least do a lot of it that way. If you know some guys that can add some tracks for a cold beverage......well now you're cookin'.

I told a friend to take all the money that he would spend on people for Christmas and record an album and have 100 made up and give them to people. You have an album for eternity and they have a present from the heart. Or some comedy depending on what is recorded. Either way it is money well spent. Sell some and recoup some of your loss for the follow up album.

Having said that, I play on others stuff and do it quick. 2 or 3 passes at I usually give them what they want. When it comes to my album I make Tom Scholtz and Boston seem like fast workers. I record and record. Then scrap it and start over. It will be the 40th anniversary soon and it hasn't even come out yet. 😛

Back in the heyday of this forum, there were enough great players to make a disc. Have a dozen different submissions of songs. Even putting together combinations of different players from here. Would have been cool.

The Dream Theater forum was doing something similar but it ended up just becoming a section where people could post their songs. Some incredible guitarists posted stuff. Lots of work putting something out with all sorts of different people. Much easier when it is just you.

We released our latest singles last week. Don't want to try and sell anything here but available through all major download options.

For those with Spotify, give them a listen if you like.

Jasen Colson (Jasen with an E)

Hard Love Livin'
Roll Me

Here is a video that my wife shot on her IPad. Of course, she sets it up upside down and gets the table in the shot. LOL - I love her. To give her a bit of an excuse, she was working a few video cameras plus shooting with her trusty Canon.

Forgive the table and IPad audio but it gives you the idea. Tune starts at about 1:10.

Thanks and glad you liked it. Will be putting together video with the soundboard audio which is a million % better than the IPad.

No attempt at selling but you can listen to the sample of the new stuff.

A legend but he often is not on many peoples' radar especially in North America.

Caught him Friday here in Ottawa. I was beside the guy filming this.

Uli Jon Roth created that whole style of classical metal guitar and was doing it for 20 years before others even came along. Cool to see someone like this in a small place and up so close. Nice guy and it was fun chatting.

Thanks for the Uli video that was great!!! His playing seems so effortless that it just flows seamlessly from his hands through the guitar and out. He seems like a good guy. I have heard a few podcast interviews with him. He was gonna be in my neck of the woods and I was pretty stoked to see him, but the show got cancelled.:(

He plays completely different than anyone that I have seen. Bizarre picking hand that moves in a different timing than what his fret hand does. Very unique form of alternate picking.

Shame that your show got cancelled as it really is a treat to see him live. Truly the neo-classical originator and even those that don't know him are heavily borrowing from him.
