John Mellencamp is gearing up for the April 21 release of his new Sad Clowns & Hillbillies LP with the release of the set’s second single, “Grandview,” as well as the album artwork and complete track listing.
As previously reported, Mellencamp recorded Sad Clowns & Hillbillies with major contributions from country veteran Carlene Carter, who’s scheduled to tour with him in support of the album. The pair is booked for a summer tour running from early June through early September, with all tickets coming with a free copy of the new CD.
The new release arrives roughly two and a half years after Mellencamp’s last full-length studio effort, Plain Spoken, which peaked at No. 18 in the U.S. in 2014. According to a press release, the new set — which was produced by Mellencamp and earlier preceded by lead-off single “Easy Target” — returns the artist “to the musical eclecticism that is, itself, a reflection of his wide-ranging musings on life.”
“Grandview,” which you can listen to below, features additional vocal contributions from country star Martina McBride. She’s set to perform the single with Mellencamp on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon tonight

Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

Cool Thanks for sharing this.

Thanks for the post.
Unfortunately sounds the same old same old from him.

I was really pleased with a relatively recent show of Mellencamp's. He has a large canon of work that is far more diversified than I'd imagined. It was like the show was divided into three distinct portions, the first being theatrical and featuring music from his play. The second was solid Americana. The third part, the shortest and most energetic consisted of his more popular tunes.
It was a really good show and I'll probably go see him this Summer at WolfTrap.

Just elaborating on the two prior posts.
John has certain style and sound no doubt, but he has deviated from it at times over the years.
Pretty much he had his 80's hey day period which has his signature sound that he became known for. In the 90's with "Whenever We Wanted" he kinda revamped his band and got away a little from that sound from the prior decade . I really liked that release, one of his better in my opinion. More into the mid to late 90's and early 200's he seemed to experiment more outside the box with different sounds and textures.
Around 2003 he started to turn back to his rootsy side a little more.
The two albums he did with T Bone Burnett , I believe are some of his strongest since 1991.
I really liked the direction of those two, especially No Better Than This . If you don't have it ,buy it!! 😛
The verdict is out on his latest, since only hearing the track from above. It does have Johns typical sound and easy identifiable as his music.
I would like to hear John just do an acoustic album more in the vein of the Burnett produced releases.

Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

Whenever We Wanted is a pretty good album. It seemed to be a departure from the 80s pop sound. The first song, "Love and Happiness" is awesome.
Everything in Moderation. Including Moderation.

The early albums are great pop with lots of catchy songs. But not really my style.
Then from Get Naked on the songs and writing style changed. Not concerned with the hits and really branching out the sound. Have enjoyed every album since to varying degrees.
His live shows are always good. I have seen him convert many non-believers.

I have the same sentiment CM. I was born and raised here in Indiana and the radio would beat us over the head with his stuff. The 80's era of Mellencamp was not my cup of tea and really did not follow him that much. I preferred more of his deep cuts during that time period. I started to pay him more attention around Whenever We Wanted.
