Lynyrd Skynyrd-T For Texas-1976

That's my favorite Skynyrd song (well okay it's a cover, but their version is simply awesome).

Skynyrd had an uncanny ability to pick great covers and make them essentially their own. And I'm not sure but I believe that Gary was the one largely responsible for giving the covers the Skynyrd treatment. His rhythm is way prominent in all the Skynyrd covers most notably "Call Me The Breeze". It appears that "T For Texas" was used as an audition song after Ed King's departure when they wanted to return to the classic 3 guitar line up. I know Artimus has commented that Leslie West came out and jammed on that tune. Prior to Ed's departure it appears to be the jam song with the opening act witness the recent black and white DVD release of Skynyrd (at the LA Forum?) jamming "T For Texas" with Hughie Thommasson and Billy Jones of the Outlaws. It has been well documented that Steve Gaines performance on this tune essentially got him in the band after his sister Cassie's constant needling to let her brother jam. The rest is history.

Steve Gaines is one of my guitar heroes. Like many musicians and artists, he hasn't gotten the credit he deserves IMO. His style just seemed so natural. I have this two solo cds. They're a kick. I believe one was recorded from a cassette tape or two from a live gig.
RIP Steve along with all your band comrades who've passed on. You are all missed.

I have "One in the Sun". Found it at a used CD store years ago for like five bucks or something. Not my favorite work of his but it is pretty good. The sound is a little muddy to my ears.
Everything in Moderation. Including Moderation.

Ed King is responsible for the arrangement of T for Texas. He's admitted One Way Out was a BIG influence on it.

Wease not doubting you, but that's news to me. Gary is the one playing the I intro riff in One More From The Road where Ronnie goes "That boys funky!" Gary is also playing it in that DVD I mentioned with Ed. Ironically Ed plays a similar slide part that Skynyrd lore attributed to Steve Gaines. Ed King while being a brilliant guitarist has in recent times being known more for stirring things up than anything else. Unfortunately for those of us who love Steve Gaines, Street Survivors is the only glimpse we have into what could have been. From all accounts he was a nice guy too. From those folks who actually knew him, he was a great, great guy.

Ed King did claim that on his forum. That he came up with the arrangement a couple of weeks before he left.

Listen to this song and sing the lyrics of "One way out"......

If the arrangement means the chords and the fact it goes early to IV, then MEH. The intro is the coolest thing about the song IMO. And Gary plays that both with Ed in the band and not. So ... But neither here nor there. Love me some Skynyrd. Allen, Gary, Ed, and Steve were and are great players who contributed so much to the legend that was and is Skynyrd.

Hee is his exact post from their archives on the old forum.

Ed said the following about "T For Texas" - which can be found in the info section ....
The T FOR TEXAS arrangement (On OMFTR) is MINE. We worked up that tune while rehearsing in Phoenix, May 1975. I had this idea for a straight 3-chord progression, uptempo tune. Ronnie wanted to use the lyrics by Jimmie Rodgers. We played it a few times...then I left the band 2 weeks later!
By "arranged", I mean I arranged the sections, the stops, the transition points, the little riffs here and there. Actually, Ronnie & I were going to write a tune around it...then when we actually got down to putting it together, he thought the Jimmie Rodgers tune would be a good tribute. I agreed. But I always thought THE TUNE WAS TOO LONG! My fault, I guess. My arrangement.
I was surprised, when I heard the version on their FOX album...the arrangement was unchanged though they didn't quite get some of the riffs exactly right.

Which is why so many many years ago, I would get ABB and LS confused - I know I know but I am a fan of LS - Simple Man especially

How about playing Allen Collins's solo along to One Way Out? My cousin and I were dicking around a month or so back and OWO was playing. I started noodling around during Dickie's solo and wound up playing Allen's part from TFT. Fit perfectly. Cuz yelled out "Skynyrd!" and we got a big laugh out of it.
