From what I've read, Danny most likely suffered from untreated depression. You can find probably a couple of dozen hours of his live performances on YouTube. Here are two of my favorites:
Austin City Limits:
American Music Shop, with Vince Gill, Albert Lee, Mark O'Connor, and others.
