Capturing the group almost fully recovered from the deaths of Duane Allman and Berry Oakley, and with a little help from their friends, they deliver one of their most outstanding performances ever.
? By the end of 1973, the Allman Brothers Band were the most popular touring band in America. They drew crowds like few others, on a par with those attracted by the Grateful Dead. So it goes without saying, that when the two groups were on the same bill, pandemonium often ensued.
? A legendary event at the Watkins Glen Grand Prix Racecourse on July 28, 1973, when the Allmans, the Dead and The Band drew an estimated 600,000 people - at the time the largest outdoor rock concert ever - illustrates this point to. Thus, given their status at the time, when the Allman Brothers chose to play New Year's Eve in the Bay Area at Bill Grahams Cow Palace, it was a benediction indeed they quite simply could have played anywhere they damn wanted. And there was a paradox - wasn't San Francisco's New Year's Eve slot by now the exclusive property of the Grateful Dead? This dilemma however was somewhat addressed, live to an FM radio audience sometime after midnight, when Jerry Garcia and Bill Kreutzmann joined the Allman Brothers Band onstage. At the time, Garcia's appearance seemed to cement a synergistic relationship between the two bands that became enshrined in rock history. At the same time, it turned out to be the end of an era not just for the two bands, but for a certain aura in post-60s rock, none of which seemed obvious at the time.

It looks like this is being released by Leftfield Media, who has been releasing a lot of old US radio broadcasts for sale in the UK.
Unfortunately this doesn't look to be an official release, however it is a show worth picking up.

Absolutely, & btw this is a freely traded show here on the boards -- that's the 'official' way to get it 😮 😉 -- also, if this is all of it, it doesn't seem to include the complete show -- but unsure (my 12/31 is on 4 CDs)

Judging from the times of the songs on my MP3's of the show the drum solo, the second part of Les Brers, Hideaway/You Upset Me & the final Mountain Jam have been cut down.
It could just be eliminating crowd noise, but I have the times of those tracks as being:
Drums 11:12
Les Brers part 2 14:34
Hideaway/You Upset Me 15:21
Mountain Jam part 2 16:25

This is evidence that there is at least some commercial demand for more ABB shows.
I wish they had a tenth of the releases that The Grateful Dead pull off .....

I remember that show and some of the great stuff Dickey did that night, GET THE CD's.

The boot is great quality. I've about worn mine to a frazzle.

One thread does not commercial demand constitute
The Brothers don't have the output of Dead shows for that reason -- the ABB indeed probably played about a 10th of of the shows the Dead did (overall)
everything commercially viable has been released IMO -- although I'd love to hear the April 1972 BB King sit-in w/the Brothers

It's also easier to make money when you have no production costs (other than duplication of the CD's) and you don't pay the artists any royalties.

It would be interesting to know the sales figures for the B & S de luxe version.
It was critically well received and, if backed by good sales, would indicate that there is demand for similar material which the band is missing out on.

I'd question whether there is sufficient demand for full commercial B & S deluxe style release of this show to justify the production costs, but why not release it as part of the archive series, where the production costs would undoubtedly be significantly lower? Surely that is what the archive series was for?
Amazon UK actually has two versions of this show listed as forthcoming releases; the 3cd version from Left Field Media, who previously release the A&R Studios recording, is scheduled for July 10th, but there is also a 4cd version by the Great American Broadcast Company scheduled for July 17th.

I wish this same outfit would release that 1974 Dickey Betts concert (was it
from San Francisco?) on CD......

I wasn't suggesting that this show be given the de luxe treatment.
Just that it would be interesting to know the sales figures for B & S to gauge whether there is demand for archive releases.

Yeah, that's becoming very confusing. Same happened with recent radio shows released from Heart and The Black Crowes. Same shows almost released in the same week / month by 2 competing companies that seem to have obtained the rights to release these archive radio shows.

It looks like both sets contain all 25 tracks. but the second 4 disc release is £16 more expensive. The 3 disc version has track times which look similar to the bootleg track times.

I have the 4 disc bootleg. I've compared the bootleg total time and the upcoming release total time and it seems that the upcoming release is approximately 11 minutes and 20 seconds shorter. All of the songs seem to be accounted for. Maybe they edited out the lengthy applauses? There is a "5-4-3-2-1...Happy New Year!" right after In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed and it immediately goes to "Statesboro Blues." If I'm not mistaken, there were some fireworks after one of the songs. Could it be that they edited these out? It's possible that the lengthy applauses were also edited too, resulting in the 11 minutes and 20 seconds (give or take).
On the other hand, it's distressing that the ABB should not see a percentage of the royalties just because the CD set was manufactured in the UK. Many products from foriegn countries are getting rich from the US consumers. I'll purchase this CD set for sure, but also out of respect, I'll make some purchases from Hittin' The Note in August when the Gregg Allman live CD comes out.

I mentioned earlier in the thread these 4 tracks look to be the tracks that looks to be edited on the 3 disc edition compared to the 4 disc bootleg that I have.
Drums 11:12 (8:07 on the 3 disc version)
Les Brers part 2 14:34 (9:50 on the 3 disc version)
Hideaway/You Upset Me 15:21 (10:07 on the 3 disc version)
Mountain Jam part 2 16:25 (8:00 on the 3 disc version)

The 4 disc version on amazon uk has now dropped down in price to £10.99. A big difference from the original £26.00.

Now, it's becoming even more confusing because apparantly that's yet another release. Another company releasing the 4CD version.

Weird -- there's been a few of these pseudo-official releases now -- seems like the Brothers must have signed off on "rights" to these shows, if they're being commercially (?) released -- are these the same comapnies that 'released' the 1972 show w/Johnny Winter last year -- confusing it is
I still say if people want this show they should trade for it -- ah but it's like the marijuana debate too -- is it cooler to keep it underground, or license it for dispensiares/commercial release -- anon anon --
for sound & musicianship it's one of the best ABB boots ever -- I say ignore the commercial version -- esp. if Brothers see no scratch from it
[Edited on 6/8/2015 by Stephen]

Well, in truth the Brothers don't see scratch from the traded versions either ... but I take your point with regards to someone else cashing in ...
I wonder whether they signed off their rights to the show back in the day when they allowed the radio broadcast to go ahead ... good for publicity and promotion at the time so maybe they did ...
If not, then they are certainly missing out by not releasing all these radio broadcasts themselves ...
The fact is that European laws state that anything broadcast free to air over 40 years ago is now legitimately up for grabs for anyone who wants to take the trouble to release it ... so given that, then the ABB only have themselves to blame for any lost revenue ... I am not saying this is right and I have long treasured my traded copy of this show ... I just don't understand why the Archive Release series was not continued by the ABB as there is obviously a market there for this material ...

There can be two sources for FM broadcast shows. One is someone taped off their stereo, hopefully reel to reel not cassette. But really the true high grade source is the "Pre-FM" reel to reel tapes that were used for broadcast. Some sound engineers squirelled this stuff away and tape still can exist
