Larry Coryell, Solo Acoustic (youtube), Yoshi's, Oakland, CA, 7-8-15

Shot this three nights ago. This was the only solo tune Coryell did. It was a quartet for the rest of the one hour 20 minute set, with sax, bass and drums filling out his band. Makes me want to see him again and again; this was only my second time. The other was a Miles Davis tribute, so Coryell's playing was more restricted in that format. He really went off this time. I have more video to come.

I recall seeing him in a tiny bar in Gainesville, FL solo 10-15 years ago to a mostly empty house. People just don't know.
I haven't listened to Spaces in Ages. Going to break that out today.
Thank you for this.

Here's another one, this time with the band.

Coryell is one of the most underrated guitarists around. Guys like Metheny, Carlton, Benton, Ritenour, DiMeola, McLaughlin, Scofield & Stern always seemed to get more press, but I think he's better than all of them except McLaughlin.
Seen him several times, although it's been quite awhile. He played mind-blowing solo for about 3 hours the 1st time I saw him in a small club in Albany, NY around 1980. Mostly acoustic guitar, but a couple of long 12 string acoustic guitar tunes & ended w/ a 1/2 hour Hendrix's Third Stone From the Sun.! He blew out 1 of 7 Marshall amps on the 1st note, turned it off & turned up all the others. Incredible show!
At a show @ Kimball's in SF in the early 90s he hung out afterward with the crowd. Someone asked how he did something on the guitar, so he grabbed it out & meticulously & slowly explained it. Never seen any other musician do that.
