Nice pick up and at a good price. Hope you bought a lottery ticket too. Lucky day.

Gregg has a sought after release so they make it unavailable. Makes perfect business sense.

That is a good score. Probably cost $25 when it was released.

I just recently purchased 'One More Try' off Ebay. I had purchased it when it was released but lost it. Recently I had missed it and started searching around for it.

It's such a shame that got pulled, one of my favorite releases by Gregg. If I recall correctly it was released around the same time as Searchin' For Simplicity, and in the middle of a dry spell for Allman-related music (late 1997). Had it not been for their near-simultaneous release dates, I wouldn't otherwise compare the two, but One More Try just blew Simplicity out of the water. So many great nuggets on there, especially if you're a fan of Laid Back (one of my favorite albums). The "Tour" rehearsal material and Laid Back outtakes are great in their own right, hardly redundant like many alternate take collections. The solo acoustic stuff is probably my favorite, especially "Circle", "Multi-Colored Lady" and "Catfish Blues". And Johnny Winter on "Waster Words"! The "One More Try" demo is light years better than the forgettable, over-produced ballad that made it on Playin' Up A Storm.

Hopefully this material sees the light of day again for those who missed it.

I don't know how I missed this release. It isn't available through the music service Rhapsody either. It is available on Amazon for $149.

Great score Matt!!!

thanks guys. it was listed on ebay less than 10 minutes lol. i was lucky i was awake that late at night and happened to search allman to see what was there. set a message to the guy, he replied right back and i bought it. said he had 2, one he bought and one given as a gift, and he just noticed it after like 17 years so he figured he'd sell one

If this release would have been authorized by Gregg and marketed properly there is no question that it still today would have had some legs. Gregg did not support the release of these recordings and wanted nothing to do with this album. It goes to show you how misguided his thinking was regarding promoting his solo career and of course more importantly The Brothers. Original material releases and well done anthologies help fuel the fire.

I wrote the liner notes and was pretty involved with Kirk West in putting this together... loved it and still do.

I have a few copies here. Never felt right to sell them but people should have. My daughter is starting a drive with charity:water to build a well in India or Central America. I will sell and donate all proceeds to this. Not quite sure how to proceed with this, but will do it. Win, win.

Me too. Bought it first day it came out. Some of the outtakes & alt versions are great!!!

I enjoy the rawness of some of the cuts & prefer this to polished recordings of today where tons of tricks are done in the studio.

some really great stuff on this thing. a little shocked there wasn't more 80's stuff. anyone have any idea how many songs Gregg recorded for that mid 80's solo album that was never released?

also I wish more pre tour warms ups were on here. are we sure "when a man loves a woman" is from the mid 70's? his vocal and production sounds a bit 80's to me

I agree, I've always assumed that was either a typo, a mislabeled tape, or misremembered. Not only is the production pure slick 80s, but Gregg's voice is a clearly from the mid 80s.

Regarding the material, I think they used what they had access to, which clearly got pulled, so I think we are lucky to have had the chance just to get our hands on this stuff. Maybe someday more material will surface if it exists.

thanks. glad I'm not alone in that. I heard and pulled the booklet back out thinking I had forgotten what I read but no it did say 70's. lets see if anyone else is in the same lime of thinking as us on the date for that one

I saw this when it came out and hesitated for a couple of months before buying it as the import price at the time was, I think off the top of my head around £36.00. I'm glad I bit the bullet and picked it up. One of my fave discs that still gets played regularly.
