John Paul Jones. Like John Entwistle of The Who, were the best musicians in their bands. Back in the nineties, when Page and Plante did some shows, I felt bad that JPJ was not invited. I remember him saying that all they had to do was call him.

I had the pleasure of seeing JPJ open for King Crimson some years back. What a night of musicianship THAT was! Jones played a number of stringed instruments with great aplomb and joy. Great sense of melody. I wish he would tour more.

Their loss and ours. JPJ would most likely have improved the new songs by Page / Plant, which really could have used improving.

Wasn't that at the RnR HOF induction speech?

JPJ was odd manned out. They couldn't all three play together without calling it Led Zep, and at the time I don't think they wanted to do that. Plant & Page has better marquee marketability than Plant & Jones or Page & Jones.

It's too bad also. If they were ever going to reunite as Led Zeppelin, then it would have been better in the early to mid 90s when they were all still generally in pretty good touring shape. Rather than in 2007. And as Jim says, JPJ would have most likely made the new Page/Plant songs much improved, especially on that second record Clarksdale. Oh well.
