"I'm No Angel" Bill Medley

I never liked this song, and even though I knew it wasn't penned by Gregg I had no idea a Righteous Brother recorded it first.

Me neither! - watta find, crazy - never heard any mention of this

Me either. I thought the original was Gregg's thou I did know Gregg didn't write it as I bought the album in 1987 and saw it was written by two other gentlemen one of whom has played in some of Clapton's solo bands. It mentions seeing my tattoos so I thought it was written for Gregg specifically.Â
In 1988 I read the album was a comeback for Gregg selling 600,000 copies and going gold. And the article said after Gregg left the Allman Brothers in 1982 which morphed into Betts, Hall. Leavell and Trucks, Gregg was seen by the industry as washed up and no longer a bankable musician. And that Gregg recorded the song in 1985 as a demo of four songs which were rejected by all the labels to which Gregg sent it.Â
Gregg eventually sent a copy of the demo to Epic Records. A&R man Michael Caplan at Epic heard Gregg sent it and he was a big ABB fan from back in the day and asked his boss if he knew about it. The boss said yes it came today and it was the same tired crap they did on their last albums which didn't sell worth a darn and he said he threw Gregg's tape into the trash can.Â
Later Caplan was able to find the tape in his bosses trash can. Played it for producer Rodney Mills and together they talked Epic into letting them record Gregg. It was the first new album with Gregg on it in 6 years.Â
Dickey couldn't get signed during that stretch either.

Laid Back will always be Gregg's #1 but my first choice to spin is I'm No Angel. Â It's a great record and Gregg really enjoyed R&B.

Wow I had NO idea. Crayzaeee YT find! It's easy to see what Gregg heard in this song, because he sure made it a lot better!
