Years ago at Birmingham's (now defunct ) City Stages festival Oteil and the Peacemakers and Bela Fleck performed on the same night. We were treated to a bass duel between Oteil and Victor Wooten! Yeah, it was cool!
I enjoy seeing and hearing these folks who can pull off the "lead bass" thing, but I have just as deep appreciation for a player who can stay in the pocket - rounding off the kick drum. It's not rocket science, but it often makes the entire song.
