I am looking for help!  I have over 50 years of music!  Just love it all!  cd's records, dvd's, even VHS and some cassettes.  I am searching for some system ( probably software) so that I can keep a list of what I have ( for example, artists or albums on records, or cd's.)  I have done a few google searches but so far can't seem to find anything.  I seem to recall a trial I did a while back on a software system.. It listed the artist and their albums or cd's.  All you had to do was click on it and it stored your content to a list.  It was about $75 and I didn't take it.  Now am wishing I did!

Any one out there have suggestions?  Thank you in advance!

I have all of my CDS & Music DVDS in Alphabetical order. And I also have all of my music on youtube music, and it's also alphabetical, but by first name instead of last name like my CDS are.

I know forum members on the Steve Hoffman forum use Discogs to catalog their music but I have never tried it

Here is the link to the "How To".  I think you have to create a free account to use it but check it out.

Alphabetically and chronologically for each artist or band. I also have mine in sections, IE: rock, blues, jazz, soul, country, bluegrass, classical, etc. I have 1600+ and it works out well. Get them recorded on your computer!

My CDs are chronologically sorted after alphabetically. I would also put genres separately, blues for instance. The problem I have had is all of the live shows and boots I have. I have no idea if there is software that would recognize any of them. A lot of them I download and then have to come up with the data (including setlists) from what was provided as well as another source. This site and a Mule site have a lot of that data for those shows. Believe it or not, iTunes actually recognizes certain shows. I guess it depends on where the recording came from.

Vinyl is a different animal. Alphabetical typically. I do put all of my ABB stuff first as I have a lot of imports and they are just easier to find.

When my wife and I moved in together much of my system kind of fell apart as I lost a lot of space. She wanted more. Shocking, right? Wink

I still have a lot of CDs in a storage unit that I want to dig out.

Everything in Moderation. Including Moderation.

In terms of physical storage, by medium, genre, artist, and release date.

For online, I used a high capacity iPod.  The device has its own artist, song and album categories.  But then there is the capability of multiple playlists.  I have huge ones that separate jazz vs non-jazz content.  Great for listening in the car but very concerned that newer car infotainment systems might not recognize or be compatible with it.

Regarding figuring out what I have, I spent the time putting together an Excel spreadsheet, organized mostly by artist and album.  Have lots of home-made stuff and this is a pretty quick way for me to find it.
