Guests with the Allman Brothers Band

Was just thinking the other night after watching the Miles Davis special on PBS American Masters how cool it was to have drummer Jimmy Cobb sit in back in 2006 (I think) with the band.
Was trying to think of all the guests who have played with the band in their 45 years.
I'll start off with:
1. Jimmy Cobb
2. John Hammond
3. Ravi Coltrane

Oh My God. I've thought about this several times and was kind of waiting for this to be brought up. Heck I could probably fill up a few pages of just the guests I have seen in person myself at their shows. This could be a fun, lengthy thread! Heh Heh...
Everything in Moderation. Including Moderation.

Hi Lee. Come on let see the list. I can add more but just wanted to kick it off.

My favorite was in August of 1980 in Los Angeles and I remember quite clearly Gregg telling the crowd that "There is this guy backstage who really wants to come out and sing"....Enter John Belushi wearing a blue Dodgers jacket and doing cartwheels....He walks up to the mic, grabs it and the brothers go into "Hey bartender".....

I saw Belushi do the same at the Capital theatre in Passaic NJ. I thinks its on Youtube.

My absolute favorites were Eric Clapton and Chuck Leavell (do former bandmates really count?). Along the Chuck line, Jack Pearson was a welcome guest every time as well as Jimmy Herring. Kofi was tremendous in 2014.
Derek as a 13 and 14 year old was awesome.
Taj Mahal
Levon Helm....I didn't see it live, but was at Smith's Old Bar watching it private performance room on screen through their PA so it felt like I was there!)
Junior Mac & Reggie McNeil (they were great but it was even better to play with them around the fire at Wanee an hour later!)
Susan T
Little Milton
Hubert Sumlin
Asbury Jukes Horns
And bunch more, particularly at Wanee and Beacon.

Johnny Winter!!!

Randy Brecker was great.
Stanley Clarke. Meh not so much.

Garcia & pretty much every other original GD member at some point
Santana & his percussionist, maybe Reitveld too
Petty & Mike Campbell
Trey & Page
Buddy Guy
Billy Gibbons
Kid Rock

Bill Evans (sax)
Billy Gibbons
Boz Scaggs
Bonnie Bramlett (and daughter)

Ben Harper!
Branford Marsalis
Col Bruce
Bob Margolin
Sonny Landreth
Buddy Guy
Levon Helm
Bonnie Bramlett
Wish they'd gotten Mavis Staples,
but at least Gregg got to be it part of the tribute

Agree with Dzobo regarding Bill Evans. Great version of Liz Reed at United Palace on 3/20/10. My second favorite behind Clapton version at Beacon in 2009. Also my favorite version of Dreams at same United Palace show. He was a great addition to stellar version of Franklins Tower in one of the Greggless Beacon shows in March 2014. Lots of great sax guys played with ABB with Bill as my favorite.

Bela Fleck
Peter Frampton
Ron Holloway

Who haven't they invited onstage, especially over the last 15 years? Here's just a few I've seen in person:
Leslie West
Taj Mahal
Dr John
Boz Scaggs
Hubert Sumlin
Johnny Winter
David Hidalgo
Roosevelt Collier
Always loved Randy Brecker, that 3/14/09 Beacon show is one of my all-time favorites. Speaking of sax, Kebbi Williams sat in on "Mountain Jam" at a Wanee and it was one of the craziest things I've ever heard, loved it. The Ron Holloway/Jack Pearson/Derek shows from 2005 are amazing.
One of my favorite moments was Warren's intro, "Ladies and Gentlemen, Television's Bruce Willis".
I didn't get to see them either time, but my favorite sit-in was The Kingpins. I probably spin the 3/23/09 Kingpins set about once a week.

hahaha if I hadn't seen photos, I'd have never believed it. I think that was one of Dickey's last shows - maybe that was the last straw?

I was gonna throw out Taylor Hicks from one of the Beacon shows, but the highlight was Johnny Winter closing out the 1st set in 2007. I remember Warren standing off to one side of Johnny smoothing out stage.
One of my non Beacon fav's was in the Meadowlands parking lot when Warren was late. Jeff Healey opened that night. I remember Dickey standing to one side of Jeff tapping his shoulder when he was up for a lead.
Toy Caldwell has a special place in my heart and when he popped out at MSG I was in a good place.
Many many special nights at the Beacon over the years, the better question is "who" didn't guest?

Bruce Willis

Bruce Willis
Yes T.V.s Bruce Willis as Warren introduced him on one occasion. He may have played twice with the Bros.? Don't forget Steven Segal & John Belushi!

Bill Ector.

I saw Larry McCray sit in at Milwaukee Summerfest '05 I believe, I recall he had a real nice sound........Peace.......joe

The two sax players on Liz Reed & Hot Lanta, 5/2/70 Swarthmore PA
Oh but for a good copy of this show

It's not as legendary as seeing Jerry Garcia or someone like that, but at one of the Beacon shows I saw, someone - I think it was Oteil - introduced a lovely young woman - looked like a KID, albeit a very confident kid - to take over bass. She freaking crushed the Beacon. I learned later her name was Tal Wilkenfeld. That was a cool guest spot. Nice to see her go on to play with El Becko. Life is good!
I was way too young to appreciate this one, but at the Crackdown on Crack show, the ABB had Mick Taylor come out for the encore. I still say that the highest compliment i have ever given of a musician is "When Mick Taylor was in his prime, he was good enough that he could have been an Allman Brother," and I still think that is true.

September 15, 1980, Germany:
"The Blues Band" from UK opened for the ABB in Sindelfingen/Stutgart. In the encore, Paul Jones (harmonica) and one of the guitar players (Tom McGuiness or Dave Kelly) plugged his guitar in. I only have a photo of Paul with Dickey, unfortunately none of the guitar player.
This has been my first of only three ABB shows, saw them again eleven years later in Cologne and then 22 years later at Jones Beach....

Great call Rusty on our buddy Bill Ector. What a moment! Glad I was there for it and got to talk to Bill about it after.

Well, in my recollections, the Allman Brothers Band were quite a force all to themselves during the summer and fall of '03!!! And I do believe most nights they were joined by Karl Denison and his Universe, my first couple shows were that year and I was quite bowled over by the whole damn deal!!! Mond blowing musical experiences.......Peace......joe
