Amazon has been a good source for some tasty radio broadcast CDs that are not officially sanctioned but are pro recorded. I just got The Who's show from Tanglewood 1970.

As y'all probably know, Tanglewood in MA was a great spot for bands to have shows filmed / recorded around this time; I've seen great footage of Chicago and Santana right around then.

The video of the Who from this show is the first 55 minutes only, though apparently there is rough footage to be found of the rest.

This CD - titled "Old England, New England" - does have at least one edit - the song "Water" is omitted - but it is a rip-roaring great show. The band is very on, giving their all for the last night of the US tour. The audio quality is terrific.

Here is the link to youtube's 55-minutes of the Tanglewood show:

As stated above the Chicago and Santana shows from Tanglewood in 1970 are also great shows.

Yes the Who and Santana were real, real good in 1970. Carlos got more buzz in the guitar magazines back then than anyone after Hendrix died. Seem to stay that way until Eddie Van Halen came along.

Eddie Van Halen apparently is suffering from serious throat cancer. I'm not a huge EVH fan but saw them 4 times in the 70's and 80's. They put on some show for hard rock. They always introduced Eddie as the greatest rock guitar player on the planet period. When I saw David Lee Roth solo with Steve Via then later in the 80's Gary Moore in New York I realised when it came to technical wizards and shredding up and down the neck at lightening speed, Eddie couldn't blow those two off the stage. If you pray, remember Eddie Van Halen. Eddie said it came from years of hiding his special metal picks in his mouth when he played his unique double tapping/hammer on technique. But I read his doctor said it is years of heavy cigarette consumption.

But I get tired of that kind of guitar playing after an hour or so but Pete and Carlos could go on for days as they play just what is necessary to move an audience.
