Watched a Dan Rather interview yesterday with the guys from America. They said that Gregg was going to do a cover of I Need You on his next album.

I would have liked to hear what he would have done with it.

I used to think Gregg could do a great job covering almost any song. One of my favorite bands is Atlanta Rhythm Section. Gregg did a cover of Normal Love, which I thought I would really like. But his version didn't do a lot for me. ( From the album All Night All Stars. Jimmy Hall does a version of Ramblin Gamblin Man. That one really got me!)

But I am glad Gregg and the Brothers did a version of Somebody Loan Me a Dime. always wanted to hear him do that one

The cover that didn't work for me was Heart of Stone. Saw it once at the Beacon when Dickey was still in the band. Their arrangement didn't get me going. Same with the Hitting The Note album. Apparently Gregg liked it.

Gregg is excellent on Tuesday's Gone on One More For The Fans recorded like at the Fox in Atlanta. Go me that would have worked on a Gregg album.

Another cover that didn't work for me was one of Gregg's songs. Tony Bennett doing Midnight Rider on Conan a number of years ago felt out of place. Like Gregg singing I Left My Heart in San Francisco would I suppose.

Gregg could not do country music, that song Memphis in the Meantime from Searchin for Simplicity painfully shows that. I also think reggae would have been a stretch for him. He did what he loved and it came out the way it was meant to be. That acoustic Whippin' Post was something I would have though impossible but he nailed it. He had a lot of talent.
