Gregg Allman & Mama's Pride (Gregg's Backing Band 1978)

LOVE Mamas Pride, a phenomenal ensemble band of guitar virtuosos and songwriters from St. Louis that put out 3 fantastic albums, but never got the recognition or success they should have.
Mamas Pride toured for about 6 months as Gregg Allman's band in 1978. The first half of each show they would perform as the opening act as themselves, Mama's Pride..then then the 2nd half of each show Gregg would headline and they were his band. Check them out if you haven't, they are amazing, especially the 3 main founding members brothers guitarists, singers/songwriters Pat & Danny Liston, and lead guitarist Max Baker.
"Statesboro Blues"
"Don't Mess Up A Good Thing"
"Trouble No More"
The 3 youtube posts above with Gregg are by Mama's Pride founder, songwriter, singer, guitarist Pat Liston.

is that where Gregg got Jimmy Essery? thought Jimmy ended up touring with Gregg and without MP for awhile.
This rocks. Thanks for posting!

Nope, Jim Essery was not part of Mama's Pride but sadly I just found this 2016 obituary for Jim who lived in St. Augustine Florida and was from Massachusetts. The Obit details Jim's wonderful work with Gregg, The ABB, and many other bands. Scroll to the 2nd Obit notice from May 18, 2016. RIP Jimmy, you are missed.

On a lighter note, yeah, Mama's Pride rocks!! And their AMAZING lead guitar player, Max Baker just had Quadruple Bypass Surgery Tuesday according to the band's Official Facebook Group. Pat Liston posted yesterday that Max came out of surgery which went well and Max is doing great!

Done a lot of tape trading (remember when it was tapes that were traded? ;)) in my time.
One regret that I have, not huge but still a regret, one time in the early '80's I made a trade with a guy and was intending on a follow-up trade if the first one went smoothly.
On his list, the only one I've ever seen listed, was a Gregg/Mama's Pride show from Florida in '78. Damn, I wish that I had gotten that one!
Sent the guy another trade proposal and never heard back from him.
"Is that a real poncho or is that a Sears poncho?"

Saw one of the Gregg / Mamas Pride shows at a small theater in Newark , Ohio . I thought at the time , that Mama's Pride sounded more like the original Allman Brothers Band , than the most recent version ( pre 1976 breakup) of the Allmans . The guitars - Danny,
Pat and Max , had the original Allman guitar sound down cold . Gregg sounded great with these guys , as I recall , a really good match . Tapes may prove otherwise ...... But as usual , you could tell that Gregg just wanted to play .
