Gregg Allman KOME/Blazy & Bob Show (Audio Only)

How Gregg Allman visited the KOME studios for an interview came as a bit of a surprise. It took some time to understand why. You see, in February of 1991, Gregg wasn't on tour and he didn't have a new album. The reason came to light later and it's explained below. How I got the rare chance was when KOME Program Director Ron Nenni called me at home asking if I could return to the studios to interview Gregg Allman at 6:00 at that night. I jumped at the chance. It was rare that we would ever record something in advance for the 6am to 10am show.
No matter who the musical guest was, I always made sure there was a guitar for them to play. I borrowed the guitar shown in the picture from Greg Mullins of The Blazers. Allman was very relaxed during the interview. I handed him the guitar and asked him if he'd play. He said sure. He could've played anything. I was thrilled when he broke into "Midnight Rider". My older brother Martin, who taught me so much about rock music, was a huge Allman Brothers fan, so I felt pretty well prepared. What I was not prepared for was the force of his vocals when he began singing only a few feet from me. I quickly turned his main mic down a little. It was a vocal power that I only heard two other times in my career. The other two were hearing Bryan Adams and Mellisa Etheridge. There's also something so cool about hearing him tap his foot during parts of this.
This was the first of two songs Gregg would perform. The other is also here on my channel. Gregg was very relaxed during the interview. It was much later that we'd learn that he had gone through rehab, one of the many times in his life. He was advised to get back to doing interviews and performing. I was one of the lucky ones that got treated to his new sobriety...along with the morning show listeners of The Blazy & Bob Show on KOME, San Jose and the Bay. I took this one and only picture while he played.
I saw Gregg two more times while he was in concert. Once in Sarasota, Florida while I was on WYNF, and the last time in the early 2000's at the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts in Santa Rosa, California while I was on KXFX The Fox. Both shows were excellent. You knew you were watching a one of a kind performer.
Here's some info on the picture and the KOME studios. KOME was located on Tisch Way in San Jose, off of Winchester, near the famous Winchester Mystery House. I had my own studio that was next to the KOME main studio, with radio station double glass in between. In the background you can see one of the two Otari reel-to-reel tape decks that recorded this song. A dispenser with splicing tape is on the edge. Before digital editing, that was how everything got cut. On the wall were various pictures of guests. On the bottom right is us with Jerry Seinfeld when we did Grammys Week Live in L.A. During that interview, he was working on a new TV show called "Seinfeld Chronicles", later to be shortened to "Seinfeld". It would be the first time we'd hear Jerry explain that the show was "about nothing".
Special thanks to Ron Nenni and Greg Mullins for their assistance with this one. This channel is dedicated to my sons, friends, and family that persuaded me to post these classic musical memories. I've remastered the original tape to remove some of the tape hiss and enhance the clarity.

Enjoyed both songs. Liked Gregg did the Laid Back version of Midnight Rider on acoustic guitar.
It's hard to believe he is gone and gone 6 years now.
