Dangerous Dan Toler!

I saw The Allman Brothers at Ocean Center in Daytona Beach in 2002.
Midnight Rider opener. Firing Line and Gambler's Roll.
Great show.

I was there, too! Went by myself. Derek's band opened for them. And then he joined the Allman Bros on stage. I was blown away! Fun night!

Derek joined them onstage frequently in 2002.

He was part of the band. He joined them, I think, in '99.

Yes Derek joined the Allman Brothers after the Beacon shows. Jack Pearson informed the band he was quiting and Butch Trucks suggested Derek. Dickey and Gregg liked the idea and Jaimoe voted for it too. Butch commented on this site how Derek was a good fit and how Derek had inspired Dickey and Dickey was playing the best he had in years. And Derek and Dickey were hot together during the summer of 1999. I thought all the drama and tension between some of the voting members which was actually the reason Warren and Woody quit in 1997 was over. But it came to a head the next year, 2000, and the band came very close to breaking up again.

Perhaps my recollection is a little hazy but summer 1999 does not stand out as a particular good period for the band. The first few shows in Colorado were rough. I remember some good shows in the South, particularly Birmingham. But they seemed to be stalled out on material. They did a questionable cover of Georgia on Fast Train at a few shows. Maybe I am forgetting some gems from that era.
