Gregg 1 year gone.

Today, sadly marks the first anniversary of the passing of a true musical legend. He certainly left us with a great musical legacy, none more so than in his final recording, Southern Blood. He was a fighter right up to the end, after battling and overcoming his demons, not that we are all perfect, far from it. I shall be playing a large selection of his material today as my mark of respect to him. Long may the road go on.

RIP Gregg, We Love You

Miss that guy.

A sad day indeed. The Southern Blood album is great. I’m watching his interview with Dan Rather now and gonna spin Allman Brothers records all day.

Hard to believe it's been one year. Gregg left a legacy of brilliant music for all to experience. His contribution is without comparison. He and the ABB forged new music. His brother's contribution is without a doubt one of the most influential in modern times. We can be thankful for having lived in the era of the ABB and all of the side projects. Thank the Lord Almighty for being able to have witnessed the remarkable expression of what was in their hearts. We will be forever grateful. It still brings tears to my eyes when I listen to Gregg's music, as well as, the ABB. How is it that one band can be so influential in a mans existence? Thank you!

I remember this day last year like it was yesterday. We had known that Gregg's health was not good but nothing definitive. Learning Gregg was gone was like getting hit with a ton of bricks. It still hurts that he is gone but also make me appreciate what he gave us even more.
I truly think Gregg was every bit as musically gifted as Duane.
I have been a fan for 45 years of the Allman Brothers Band and their music. It's hard to describe what they and their music mean to me. It almost like I was part of the band. Sounds silly but I know there are many here who have visited this site that feel the same way.
I will miss new music and shows but I will always love and cherished the music and how it makes me feel.
Long live the Allman Brothers Band!
Steve

Gregg was indeed as musically gifted as Duane. Two different personalities but equals. Gregg trusted his brother when inside he had his doubts and he said when the first two ABB albums died on the vine, his doubts intensived and he wondered if he should go to dental school after all. But he always said his brother had no doubts his band was the ticket and would succeed.
Gregg's solo career is a big part of why I like him too. His solo albums were very good. In 1973 I played Laid Back as much as Brothers and Sisters.
And more than once Gregg said his solo career gave him the opportunity to do his songs closer to the way he wrote them. The ABB always changed them when working up their arrangements. Berry Oakely and Butch Trucks changed Whipping Post to the point it was in a different time signature.
I remember on the 1975 ABB tour, Chuck Leavell opened Midnight Rider on piano the way Gregg wrote it and how it starts on Laid Back. Then they would seque into the Brothers arrangement.
And remember Laid Back was done because Gregg's wonderful song Queen of Hearts was rejected by the Allman Brothers. I think I will play Queen of Hearts right now.

I really enjoy Gregg's 80's music. He liked singing R&B and listening to I'm No Angel, he sounds like he was having fun. Good times!

'Cause time goes by like pouring rain, and much faster things

Gregg's contribution to music is undeniable. We can all be thankful we were able to witness his music and all that entails. His music will continue to influence people for years to come. Thank You Gregg.

I cannot believe it has been a year, it seems like only a few months ago. He left a legacy and will not ever be forgotten. His love and music lives on in everybody, and to think he wanted to become a dentist, in this case the road not taken turned out to be the best one for everybody else and him too, realizing himself and his talents evolving to create a musical empire and inspiration to everybody. He accomplished what Duane wanted to do, given the high standards that Duane had, that's the best compliment he could ever get, achieving the DREAM.

A sad day indeed. The Southern Blood album is great. I’m watching his interview with Dan Rather now and gonna spin Allman Brothers records all day.

I still have trouble listening to that record. It’s really REALLY good. But it’s tough to listen to, with what those songs are about and what happened right after. I think I’ve spun it maybe 3 times. I often eye it up but can pull the trigger to take it off the shelf.

I think of Gregg daily and how much I miss not only him, but also Butch and The Allman Brothers Band. So many fine friends and famABBly made on account of them and the mutual love of the music THEY collectively made. God bless us all.
