Grateful Dead 50th anniversary box set

The Dead have announced their big 50th anniversary set. 30 shows, one unreleased show each year from 66-95...80 CD's.
Limited to 6,500 and $699.

Also a 4-disc set with one song from each of the shows in the box set for $45.
In other Dead news, pre-sale for the webcast of the Fare Thee Well shows is open now, $99 for all 5 (says special price through June 5). And will also be available on many cable carriers and Dish Network and DirecTV. Video On Demand available for 30 days after the shows for web, probably TV too.

sorry GD - gonna pass on these
some great shows in that box, but...

will this 4 cd set be available at retail outlets?

If it sells out, and it will, that box set will gross over 4 million dollars. All for shows that are so unremarkable they STILL haven't been released 20 years after Jerry's death.
Say what you will about the music, but you have to tip your cap to The Kings Of Marketing.

The core members signed a deal where they don't do any of this stuff any more.
They just sit back and collect the cash.
I like this version of the business model.

On a related note, on our local news this morning they just announced that more tickets are being released for the final Chicago shows. All three of them. Two ticket limit per person.
I will give it another shot.

umm on several dead forums people are going crazy over 6-7 of the shows being released in this set asking why it took 20 years for those great shows to get released

signed a deal not to do what? rhino and other archivists have been handling the deads vault releases for decades

Overheard on Conan the other night:
"The Dead are releasing a box set of 80 CD's for their 50th anniversary. No word on what song it will be!"

That is pretty funny, Conan.

These are very good one's.
11/14/1973, San Diego Sports Arena, San Diego, CA
5/16/1981, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY
9/18/87, MSG (Best damn Dew you'll ever hear, for sure)

They signed the current deal with Rhino in 2006.
"Rhino, a subsidiary of the Warner Music Group that is best known as a premier reissue label, will oversee everything from the band's vast archive of live recordings and its Web site to its merchandise and use of its likeness. Grateful Dead Productions will retain creative control, and the deal does not include the band's music publishing."

yes that was about a decade ago but even with that most of the deads archives have been handled by someone else since the early 90's. then they had dicks picks and the current daves picks

I thought lee was having us all over on the fourth?
