From the fall of 2009 through the beginning of 2014, Furthur was the main project for Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir and bassist Phil Lesh. The pair formed the band with keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, drummer Joe Russo, guitarist John Kadlecik and vocalists Sunshine Becker and Jeff Pehrson. While Furthur was put on hiatus for 2014, it appears the group is officially finished

Weir spent the beginning of 2014 touring with his RatDog outfit before taking time off the road and cancelling the rest of his gigs for the year. Lesh has spent the year playing many gigs at his Terrapin Crossroads venue and performing at impresario Peter Shapiro's venues with Phil & Friends. Kadlecik performs often with Lesh and with his own John K. Band outfit. Russo has kept busy with a variety of projects including Grateful Dead tribute act Joe Russo's Almost Dead and Chimenti toured with Weir & RatDog. Pehrson has two bands of his own - Box Set Duo and The Fall Risk. Becker has guested with a variety of acts over the year.
First the ABB and now Furthur.

Not that the bands are comparable (though I enjoyed my 3 Furthur shows very much), but this is just another reminder that the ABB went out the right way w/ an announced, and glorious, final show rather than fizzling out like this.

It was over for me before it ever started. Ugh.
I wouldn't exactly call it fizzling, the shows in mexico were billed as last ones before an extended hiatus. The Mexico shows were a lot of fun and no one there knew if they would ever play again.

It cracks me up how some folks rush in to post their indifference to some topics. Isn't the Internet grand?
I have great memories of my Furthur shows (some moreso than others). I can only assume the tent is being folded in preparation for the final tour of the remaining band members for their 50th. While it may not be pre-'78, I look forward to whatever they have left in them. I consider anything coming a celebration of their history as well as some great songs.

I think Phil signing up for the residencies at the capitol and the terrapin station's success and Bob's TRI Studios and Russo, Chementi and Kalidek being younger (like derek and warren) also sealed the deal last year. we'll see if the Dead do a 50th reunion next year but i wouldn't count on it. at least not a big tour. maybe an east, west and midwest tour for maybe 6-9 shows total.

Still miss The Quintet. Was listening to the Bertha remaster of the 2001 Red Rocks show recently. Even has a "Blue Sky" with a great Barraco piano solo on it.

Well said , I enjoyed the two Furthur shows I attended , lots of fun .
Phil said in a Rolling Stone interview early this year that at 74 he's too old to do a full bore major tour, so I wouldn't get my hopes up regarding The Dead. Terrapin Station is a perfect outlet for him........play a bunch of shows at the same venue, close to home. I'd say it's possible the Dead may do a few big city shows for their 50th but I wouldn't expect anything more.

I wanted to post an almost identical message. You beat me to it 😛 😉 . I must admit i never been a big Grateful Dead fan either. I can't say i'm very impressed by Bob Weir. When i picked up "There And Back Again" from Phil Lesh & Friends i really digged it. Also plenty of their live stuff. I really hope the Quintet version will tour in Europe someday.
The problem for me with Furthur is the same as with the Grateful Dead: Bob Weir. Guy is NOT a musician. 😛

Let me start off by saying that during many Bobby songs, I often went to the bathroom at dead shows. Bobby's choice of songs and such were not my favorite by any means and I've seen Ratdog shows that rival some of the worst concerts I've attended.
That being said, I am a guitarist and Bobby is one helluva great musician. His inversion chord choices, his rhythmic timing, etc all add up to an incredible ability for a dyslexic such as himself. He may not be your cup of tea, but there's no denying his talent. Check out his chord voicings and rhythm on things like Playing in the Band and Music Never Stopped and Help/Slip/Franklins. He is a monster.

You're totally right. I was just kicking up some mess, for fun. He had a unique style both harmonically and rhythmically as a player and could in his prime be a very smart and sensitive improvisor. And trust me, I don't need to go back and listen, I know those tunes like the back of my hand. You are also right on to call out Playing in the Band first -- in particular the modal break that they would go into in the middle), which remains one of the better moments in his songbook.
I shouldn't let my total impatience with his singing and the majority of his songwriting eclipse his legitimate strengths. And you know what? Nobody put a gun to Jerry's head and made him continue to play in a band with someone who would call a Sugar Magnolia segue out of some hushed, gorgeous Morning Dew.
