Favorite Bass Line Intro To A Song?

Everybody loves Whipping Post, but what others songs start with a beautiful thumping bass line.
I really love cranking the sh#t out of this baby....

How Many More Times

Nice, I dig those, I'm almost drawing a blank as those were obvious choices, Another great starter (tho ild) is James Gang's Woman. The song itself rocks a lot harder than bass intro, but them Jim Fox drums and high hat are spot ON!

Drums come in at the same time as the bass in these two, but two songs that lead with some really grooving bass are "So This Is Love" by Van Halen and also "Stratus" by Billy Cobham with Tommy Bolin (Leland Sklar on bass).

Good ones w/Post the obvious one - not that it’s a ‘standout’, but I love I-Illness & Otiel’s driving intro
Speaking of Oteil, his very affecting intro to Three Views of a Secret, from the excellent 2005 or so Jaco Pastorius Big Band CD, The Word Is Out!

"Money"...Pink Floyd
"I just want to make love to you"...Foghat

Theme from Barney Miller
American Life, My Name is Mud, hell just about anything from Primus.
Someday, everything's gonna be different
When I paint my masterpiece.

King Curtis - Memphis Soul Stew

The Real Me

Great calls so far. So This is Love is my favorite Van Halen song. Running with the Devil is a pretty iconic bass opening, too.

I'm A Man - Chicago
Little Green Bag - George Baker
Tool - Schism
Beastie Boys - Sabotage

Under Pressure - Queen and David
Superfreak - Rick James
Metallica - For Whom The Bell Tolls
Kind of Blue - Miles Davis

thorazine shuffle
sinister minister- victor wooten crushes this live

The Lesh bomb opening of The Other One always had an undeniable impact

Interesting topic and many good examples. The first one that came to my mind was Badge by Cream.

Blue Bayou
Thorazine
Don't Step on the Grass Sam
Radar Love

Some great tunes listed already that would have taken me a long time to remember.
I haven't seen GIMME SOME LOVIN' by Spencer Davis Group
Love that one too!

It is so f%$king sad that Parkinson's has taken her voice from her.

Thank You
ZZ Top

Super Fly - Curtis Mayfield

One of These Days
Too Rolling Stoned
Jump in the Fire
Live Wire
Peace Sells But Who's Buying
Dive & Lounge Act by Nirvana
Black No 1 by Type O Negative pretty cool
I used to listen to punk rock as a kid, they always had some cool ones. Dead Kennedy's Holiday in Cambodia and California Uber Alles (accompanied with drums) are good. Black Flag's Six Pack. God Saved the Queen by the Exploited was one of my favorites.

It must be 30+ years since I listened to the Exploited but this song still sounds pretty bad ass

This one comes to mind first
Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

Two Janes Addiction songs came to mind laying in bed:
Mountain Song and off the same album Summertime Rolls

2 more janes addiction tunes: three days and ted just admit it. they really were a great band!!

How about Chili Peppers version of Higher Ground

Not the
first notes but Standback with Greggs piano and Berry’s bass has to be one of the most unique instrumental intros of all time. In fact, one of the most unique songs of the ABB repretaire

I really Love Jack Bruce on the song Badge.

It is not bass by itself, but the driving bassline that kicks off "Heart of the Sunrise" is nasty.

Absolutely.
