Mad

I know there are worse things but we just checked my son's blood sugar for the fifth time during the night. Fortunately his bs is up now. I could go the rest of my life not having to open another apple juice box but like I said earlier, there are worse things so I try to keep things in perspective…

Here's to "The eagle flies on Friday…"

He may have a condition called "insulin resistance" which is actually a form of hyperinsulinism. The body puts out waaay too much insulin in response to sugar. Diet can help. Try to get him to drink more water. Soda is bad. Switch him from soda to juice, then transition him to water so he drinks less juice. Try juice boxes which provide a measured portion, you can see how much sugar is in it. Also try having him eat fruit instead of the juice, he will be filled up more, and will want less. A handful of grapes is better than a glass of juice.

Also carbohydrates get broken down into sugars. Any cookies with sugar in the middle of them are worse than plain cookies. Start reading labels and see how much sugar is he getting.

Both of my parents developed maturity onset diabetes, I have always had to watch my blood sugar. My Great Grandfather needed his leg amputated from the effects of diabetes. It can damage your kidneys, eyes (diabetic retinopathy causes the blood vessels to bleed and can even lead to blindness).

The child needs more protein and vegetables that will not spike his sugar levels. There are recipes on the internet for foods that offer the same taste, texture as their more sugary peers, start looking into that. His sugar is too high because of his body's response to what he is eating/drinking AND how his body is metabolizing it. Diabetes CAN be dealt with BEFORE it gets to the point that he needs insulin the rest of his life. IF he was born that way with juvenile diabetes, then his pancreas and it's functioning were that way from the get go, but if not, you can help him.
