Happy 4th Everyone! I'm guessing most of you saw/heard the epic Mountain Jam from last year with Trey from Phish sitting in.

Here is an interesting interview snippet with Derek talking about how that came about, and having some high praise for Trey. Check it out!

SH: Shifting gears a bit, last year, Trey Anastasio sat in with TTB at the beacon. How did that come about, and what prompted choosing a mammoth tune like “Mountain Jam” for the occasion?

DT: He’s always been great to be around and just a super, super humble guy. I remember when he sat in with the Allman Brothers, it was a good hang. When we talked about having him come and sit in at the Beacon with us, I think we had the notion of doing “Mountain Jam” early on. I was just waiting to pick out the right time to do it. He seemed into the idea. Knowing his pedigree and what he does and knowing he had just gone through the Grateful Dead ringer and all that stuff, it felt like it’d be the right guy to step in and do it. I knew he’d give it a hard listen and give it the respect it deserved.

It was fun. We rehearsed maybe parts of it at sound check and just let it fly. That was a pretty special show and definitely that moment was great. We thought about breaking it back out again, but I feel like that’s one you got to pick and choose. Like we were talking earlier, you got to be ready for it and you got to mean it. He certainly showed up.

Another nice interview, and that was probably the most interesting bit. I think it's now mandatory to ask Derek how he balances a 12-piece band on the road, even though TTB is closing in on a decade together.

Thanks for this post. I've always respected and followed Trey. He get's ripped up on this forum typically, but if you just let his peers speak, it's obvious he is one of the greats of his generation.

Phish doesn't get the respect they deserve, probably won't either. Usual argument is the lyrics, but then again Zappa's lyrics are silly and no one disparages him. Closed minded in my opinion.

Fair enough. But a question for you....Can you name a guitar player from a "big" band who gets ripped by his peers?

"Can you name a guitar player from a "big" band who gets ripped by his peers?"

The very same Derek Trucks who had such nice things to say about Trey once talked about a big guitar player selling out by saying they were "sucking the Devil's ****"

So yes, Derek calls it like he sees it, and he doesn't give out praise to those he considers unworthy.

Interesting comment by Derek, I wonder who he was talking about?

Phish takes more risks than most bands would ever consider in front of a paying audience. That can lead them into some beautiful places, but sometimes it does end in a mess. Talent that takes risks like that will slip and fall occasionally. I think that is what their detractors sometimes focus on.

That said, I'm more a fan of their jamming and some of their cover selections than of their studio work.

That was a good read. Can't wait for the new album and to catch a Wheels of Soul date.

On Trey I love him and am glad Derek has such praise for him.

That MJ was outstanding. Listening was like having the brothers back, albeit for only a brief moment in time.

I think I listened or watched it at least 10x after it aired.

I agree with BigV 100% and take any public comments whether by Derek or anyone else, with a grain of salt. Musicians are no more reliable sources of information than politicians. Derek in particular is far to polite to trash-talk.

I'm glad Derek and Trey are friends.

Once when Derek told the story of when Gregg walked on to the tour bus and said "Alright, who's the effing Phish fan!?" Derek said "Not me. I don't like Phish.... at all." lol

pretty sure derek was referring to carlos santana.

this was prior to derek opening up for santana at msg (and maybe other places). santana was very full of praise for derek back then and i think derek was quite young when he said it. fast forward a couple of years after that santana tour and carlos is sitting in with the dtb.

i could be wrong, but 'm 99% sure.

Nice discourse on this topic. I'm always afraid that I'll be attacked when I defend Phish. Appreciate the pleasant responses on this topic.
